My brother did his national service there in the Royal Signals, he was a linesman replacing telephone cables as they got stolen by the locals, also made a couple of sorties into the mainland Malaya jungle.

He was attached to the RAF base, witnessed an RAF jet crash and burn on the runway.

I witnessed similar at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus in 1984 - a Red Arrrows plane crashed into the runway whilst training. Happily the pilot survived...

The meaningless phrase

Up to £x,xxx off

Evans Halshaw Nissan dealership on the A1231 has a sign by the roadside with a load of company logos on it and something like

Up to £6,000 off if you work for any of these companies

Meaningless b*****ks

Ay up!

Given the chat re sneezes above can I put hay fever in room 101? With the late snows, the tree pollen season has been delayed which means I have had both tree and grass pollen hitting me together. Red eyes, coughing, sneezing, you name it.

Windows 10 Feature Update 1803 please.

I've just spent the better part of a day recovering my system from a failed update and then other half switching off all the privacy snooping options

The "L-Driver on Motorways" entire discussion on Jeremy Vine today...had me very loudly and fruitlessly expressing my opinion at the callers!

I may well have switched off and may be inaccurate in my recall but I do believe a driving instructor admitted the Driving school "Boxes on the roof" could be unsafe at 70 mph on a motorway. They are obviously safe at 70mph on a dual carriageway. #-o

Oh and politicians are already well deposited here, and they usually weasel out of answering direct questions, and making up one of their own to answer....as in PMQ's every single week....so it was refreshing to see Richard Madeley backing our Defence Secretary into a corner and metaphorically knocking him out!

Agreed - I can think of a prime candidate for that one - she's not very bright and can't add up, suffice it to say that if she used her figures to fund the new Police Officers, they wouldn't get more than about £800 salary a year! God help us all.

Today's Room 101 is Autonational Rescue, a company I've praised here in the past.

I rang them a couple of weeks ago, in response to my renewal premium.

"Oi", said I, "you've put my premium up again" [only by a modest £2 or so, but they did last year too, it adds up].... "I've had a look on comparison websites and can get a cheaper deal with someone else, but I trust you; on the occasions that I've used you in the past, your service has been exemplary"

...however, I'm not paying £72 as an existing customer, when I've not called you out for 3 or 4 years; and a new customer can pay £54, so I suggest you gimme your £54 deal please, which'll still see more of my money making it to you; than if I let it lapse and take out a new policy via a comparison website which will take a cut"

Sorry sir, said the operator, no can do

"OK, said I, I'll let it lapse,. enjoy a period of No Cover until my next long trip

Ridiculous!
