Ok try pressing 1, 3 and 5 buttons together. This is another reset worth trying. You should here a beep. Keep that USB drive in and see if it will read it after the the reset. Running out of options, I'm looking for repair links now while you try that. Sometimes it may take a while to detect the USB. You can try removing and reinserting it again if it doesn't pick it up the first time.

Ok, I think we should try a BSI reset as I mentioned earlier. This will shut sown all the cars ECUs and may cure some of the electrical gremlins. When you have finished this, insert the USB stick again.

Follow this guide to the letter - and don't open any doors, or press any switches during the process or it will 'wake up' the car's systems.

Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure

If this does not cure it, a Lexia can be used to interrogate the ECU - but - I have looked at all the faults and codes listed for the unit and there isn't really a lot to be done as it will either be a ECU data communications problem or BSI issue - and there is nothing covering the hard drive. If this has become corrupted, then it will need to be replaced. Unfortunately, because you probably won't have a copy of the hard drive's 4 partitions which includes the operating system and coded Vehicle data, if you could find a replacement drive, it will need coding and all the parameters configuring to the vehicle. There are a lot of parameters affecting everything from parking assistance to GPS, audio settings, radio bands etc., etc., you get the picture. So try the reset above, and if nothing helps, contact Citroen to ask where you can get a replacement Hard Drive from for the unit. They may say that they would have to replace the unit, but it is worth asking. Even second hand units are rare and expensive. The only place I know that repair OEM Head Units are in my post here - but I'm not sure if they repair the Harman Becker type, who make the NG4 system. One is UK based, the other in Spain, but is another option to consider. The only issue with Head Units (especially this one) is that they often control or interface with other functions of the vehicle.

No. It's a procedure we use here on the C series vehicles to solve a variety of issues. The C5 can have in excess of 20 ECUs all controlled by the main computer or BSI. Sometimes the ECUs or the BSI can suffer with a glitch, like your home PC. A reboot will often cure some issues. This is a Citroën documented procedure and will not cause any damage. Just follow the instructions. I'm not saying this will resolve you problem, but it costs nothing to try.

Just to highlight that, my main computer refused to boot a few days ago, got part way through the POST - to "Initialising USB controllers" and stopped there - multiple attempts failed.
Turned the power off for the whole shebang (there are twenty appliances plugged in to the cascaded sockets)
Tried again a few hours later and all was well again.

How many plugs in the sockets Steve? :)
Another thing that works is to power off the PC, remove the plug from the back and hold the PC power switch on. That clears any memory resident issues retained in between normal power ons.

20 :(

It's a bit of a fiddle getting to the off switch at the rear and of course the mains connection.
I just shut the lot off at the wall on the other side of the room. The clock resets itself and so would the phone if it worked
The rest is power adapters for phones and USB players, USB hubs, a couple of data switches and the printer, a couple of lights and other assorted nonsense, nothing critical.

I thought I was in for another new motherboard, presumed a trashed BIOS due to a power spike. Relieved when it all came back to life.

Really sorry to hear that Alan. Your issue has got me digging again on the Hard Drive issue. I had one attempt to clone my original Hard Drive on my system (just in case anything went toes up in the future), and I had limited success with that at the time. I mentioned these 40 Gb ATA automotive drives are like hens teeth to get hold of, so I used an adapter and a SSD drive. The only issue with that was it doesn't support the TRIM function, which will build up write issues and slow everything down very quickly, so I gave up.

Anyway - it might be worth seeing what the dealer has to say - a phone call won't hurt. Ask them if they can source a new hard drive for the Harmon Becker NG4 Navidrive 3D with operating system and correct partitions - or if not, do they have a contact at Harmon Becker Automotive? Best of luck, and sorry you couldn't get it back to life.

Are the drives EIDE or SATA, and what is their physical size?

They are 40Gb PATA drives and are of automotive specification. They are made by Toshiba and must meet the high operating demands for automotive application to cope with operating at extremes of temperature, altitude and vibration. They are a speciality drive that was developed specifically for this purpose. They use a form of Linux QNX and have 4 partitions that have to be exactly the same size. Most second hand 40Gb ATA IDE drives out there are generic drives pulled from older laptops that won't cut the mustard. Newer interfaces are not supported like SATA and as I mentioned SSD doesn't work for very long because of the way they write and delete data blocks to NAND memory cells is different, causing cell faulure and performance degradation in this type of application with this OS.

It could be worth taking a look at the drives Panasonic used for their "Toughbook" range, which are supposed to be strong enough to be dropped from the pilot door of a 747 (OK, lid is closed, but laptop is on and running).
