While driving around trying to find a nice one, or on normal journeys with a pre-programmed eye adds a touch of randomness to the exercise, Geograph is a fantastic resource playing round with the Browser Tab, to select an appropriate quest.
So here is the Browser page absolutely festooned with 10,371 fingerpost signs. To the left of the page (I have selected England as an example but as reported yesterday I was dabbling about in East Lothian, and all parts of the United Kingdom are covered), there is a list of Counties.

Fingerpost signs/ pre-warboys with the County "ring" on top are a bit of a rarity in Hertfordshire here's one

and in County Durham, in 2020 this was still there and has been spruced up at bit. At Blackhouse next to the former Charlaw Inn, a route I was more than familiar with, and indeed my Triumph GT6 suffered a sheared kingpin there and I very nearly lost a wheel back in the 1980's. Finger post signs with the County Ring are also a rarity in Durham.
