Richard, that would be absolutely excellent I've been looking for inspiration to do a long distance ride and was even contemplating LEJOG but that would be even better

Also I could see the other Forth Bridge and with my other interest in railways it would be perfect..

So yes, please do keep me posted..

The other things I was thinking of was riding some stages of this years' Tour of Britain bike race... Glasgow to Castle Douglas and Carlisle to Kendal look particularly good (and hard!). I could get some mint cake at the same time

Friend of mine is currently engaging in a mini-epic bike ride back from Lithuania having invested in a Moulton TSR Rolhof, heading for Amsterdam and a ferry back to Newcastle.

Not a kick in the pants from Goldap in Poland at the moment

Wonder if any of the FCF assembled throng have the remotest connection with this bit of Poland?

The bike is a product of Somerset, Bradford-on-Avon to be precise and one of Alex Moulton's iconic designs, with a bit of a cult following. Here's a little piece from Wiki about him

.....Moulton started up a new company, Moulton Developments Limited, to design the suspension system for British Motor Corporation's new small car, the Mini, that was being designed by his friend Sir Alec Issigonis. The combination of conical rubber springs and small wheels was one of the many innovative developments that allowed Issigonis to achieve the Mini's small overall size. This was later refined into the hydrolastic and hydragas suspension systems used on later British Leyland cars such as the Austin Maxi, Austin Allegro, Leyland Princess and Rover Metro, and most recently on the MGF.

Its the Open University...expect no "frills" in the presentation! Its not on youtube so no neat embeding just an old fashioned link..

Never heard of any of those apart from the Polski Fiat... I remember those well... Their reputation was not good as I recall... A close neighbour to my parents had one...

Cheapest car in the UK for a good time but they did not last long due to low quality raw materials... Mechanically they were ruggedly agricultural but the bodies dissolved long before they wore out...

Wonder if there's any left in the UK now?

The others there are FSO cars, they also built cars based on FIATs the FSO125p for example.

Going back to bridges for the moment. Today marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the first Severn Bridge...

I recall going over it soon after it opened... Many did, just for the novelty of it...

I recall the time before it opened, as part of my business I used to run villagers to the Aust ferry, usually meant a long wait in a traffic queue.

.Just heard this on the radio tonight 50th Anniversary of the first broadcast of Star-Trek in the USA. September 8th 1966, NBC broadcast "The Man Trap" the first episode of Star Trek. Here's 2m 06s of the opening sequence on youtube.



The Uk had to wait until 1969, when the BBC decided to show "Where no man has gone before" as their first episode from the series.

Regarding the Polski Fiats - given the rise in popularity of Eastern Bloc motors in the last few years and the ever rising trend for them to be imported from the likes of Hungary and Turkey, there are probably more around now than any time in the last few decades!

Remember last time I looked there was but one FSO Polonez shown on Howmanyleft.com. Made me sad, for while it was a truly dire car (this is coming from a Lada enthusiast!), they looked fantastically distinctive and I'd love one as an occasional Sunday driver and show car.

Really do need to see if I can find a digital copy of the original Star Trek pilot somewhere (assuming it still exists somewhere that is) as it must be one of only a handful of episodes save for a few bits of Deep Space Nine that I've not seen. Grew up with The Next Generation and confess to being a bit of a Trekkie. Being honest, as a kid, that and the early morning Open University stuff were about the only things you could keep me still in front of the TV for for more than five minutes, would otherwise have much rather been outside. ...far cry from the norm these days it seems!
