Yes it is.
Vacuum pipe is what you need.
Could be the vac solenoid that's duff.

I'll show you where it is and where the vac pipe is if you are around in light sometime

As a strict non-drinker I'll have nothing to recover from. I intend getting up at about 6am and taking advantage of the quiet roads and ride down to the coast - Portsmouth, have a brew and some breakfast and ride back :)

I'd guess I'll be home by about 11am!

I'm running a double-header parkrun on New Year's Day and than I'll be doing what you will be doing Mike, more or less, going for a long bike ride and finding a nice cafe somewhere :)

Another thing I will be doing in the future is replacing the gearbox oil. I was unable to find any Total BV 75W80, but Total themselves have shown that their Gear 8 oil is suitable for the ML5T 5/1 gearbox;

https://www.total.co.uk/lub-advisor

https://total-gbr.lubricantadvisor.com/ ... 015_en.pdf

I think this is worth knowing, in case anybody is fixated on the BV 75W80 oil.

OK, that might explain things.

While it was quiet this morning I had a quick look under the bonnet at the vacuum piping. One of them (after the T join) headed off under the cover for the nearside sphere. After I took the cover off I found something unexpected. That pipe was not connected to anything, and had a bolt in it, blocking it. I don't know what THAT electro valve does, but I shall see what happens when I next take her out for a drive.

Did you connect it to something? It sounds like it could be the EGR that was disconnected...

Marc : can you please provide a diagram of the vacuum hoses on James’ car then we have something to work off when he comes over next week and specify what size of vac pipe it uses?

I have connected the pipe to the electro valve that resides under that cover (there was an 'empty' spigot). There are two electro valves close together; one for the turbo, the other for the EGR (but I don't yet know which is which).

I cynically wonder if this had been done to either get some easy (and expensive) 'work', or to devalue the car to reduce the amount of money somebody would have to pay for it, or to mask an expensive fault for when somebody came to buy her. I know I bought it from a trader, but I wonder how much they knew about her.

Sorry about putting you to all this effort, Marc.

OK, re-connecting that pipe has not made any difference to her whatsoever. If I scratch my head any more I SHALL end up bald!

How much of a vacuum should there be on the vacuum pump (and should it be a smooth or pulsed vacuum)? I checked the pipe was secure on the pump, then I disconnected it and fired up the engine. There IS a vacuum, but it does not seem that strong, and (if the sound is anything to go by) it is pulsed.

James, have a look at the mechanics manuals I uploaded

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=61218#p590278

The pressures for the air supply circuit to the butterfly valve / EGR etc are shown there for testing,. There is not a lot of pressure needed at all:

Download the C5 MK I 2004 manual and look on pages 218-219. Your engine is the RHZ variant.

Re: My turn for a C5!

Post by Hell Razor5543 »

As mentioned in the "Crotch Rocket" post by Michel, I am going to have to get a nut splitter (and I have ordered one off e-bay for under £6). As the switch is faulty (and I have proven this is the case; two pins through the wires, when touched together, popped open the glass) I decided, yesterday, to replace the tailgate glass switch on the C5. Unfortunately I had not allowed for the possibility that the wiper arm had seized on. I tried too hard to remove it, and have avoidably damaged a couple of things (that I will have to replace; bloody ham-fisted idiot I am!). I have, however, probably found why the heated glass isn't working well; there are signs of damaged wiring. I am not sure if it is something I can repair (not sure if my soldering iron is good enough for that gauge of wiring), so I will either get an auto electrician to fix it or get a replacement one from a scrappy.

I have also found a NEW issue with her (she is biting me and my wallet, but I hope she will stop that soon), in that the N/S/F calliper is binding. I don't know if it is the calliper or the cables. I have contacted PTS, explaining what I know (so far), and she is provisionally booked in for the rear arm bearings, front brakes, vacuum, and bushes. Lesser things (oil change, screen wash pump, and so on) I will do myself.

I know that (with what I have paid for her so far, and the costs in the near future) I probably could have bought a better car. However, I could have spent a few thousand and still bought a lemon. Bearings, brakes and bushes are a long term consumable, and should be good for a few years. Hopefully, once I have got her sorted, she will be good for a long time (barring unforeseen problems such as accidents).
