I agree the most likely is the Esprit, once you eliminate the fisheye effect of Jim's picture, but as Steve and Jim said the early Esprits were fitted with the SM's gearbox and that was kept until the later stages. You can read all about it here.

Its a pity Jim didnt quite get the numberplate in focus. This example of probably a rare-ish colour and model was sold from Northants in Jim sort of territory.

has a bit about the orange colour...
For sale is my very original matching numbers 1976 Lotus Esprit S1 restoration project. This car is an original gelcoat orange car which originally had a tartan trimmed interior. This Esprit S1 is a very early example which means it is arguably the most desirable age of Esprit......

The car still is in orange gelcoat and there is no paint on the body shell as the colour was put in the mould of the car back in the factory. The previous owner had some of the car re-gelcoated to keep it totally original, but this job needs finishing or just painting with conventional paint; this means that the car will cost less to re-spray as there is no paint to take off.

Seen today during my bike ride...

Not a clue what it is... It looks rather smart...

And I don't mean the black Transit in the background

Apologies for the quality... Zoomed from a video still and at the time of capture we were both negotiating a busy junction!

I thought this James when I first saw it...

Looks like one of those things you have on your drive Jim :-D , Mazda MX5? of a newer version than "yours". Has those mean looking "eyes".

The fuzzy numberplate makes it a little more diffcult than it could have been :-D

No, not an MX-5 Neil, I think James has it now I've looked at some Google images...

Sorry about the number plate... Neither car nor I were in an optimum position to get a good view :( It always happens the most interesting vehicles never come out well...

I get excellent captures of all the modern tat none of us have any interest in

Just have one little look at this Jim to be sure, black door mirrors, very similar wheels, but I do think the Mazda MX5 lights are maybe a touch more mean looking than the FIAT.

Neil, definitely not that version of the MX-5 as one thing I did note, despite concentrating on the road more than the car. was the bonnet badge being black and very prominent. It stood out against the red paintwork...

I rather like that variety of MX-5 :D Especially those lights! Best I've seen in a while but still not a match for the S1 MX-5 in my humble...

There's something about pop-ups that I find very alluring
