Re: I am an V6 Activaist, a Sink-erist and an AX'er
Well, that is that, TaffyTiva is off to her new home. Off to a Citroen Specialist Garage owner in Ireland to be his personal car...
On another subject, I have been trying various methods to make a secure replacement OEM plastic leak-back pipe (bubble ended)....the "double bubble" version seems like the best bet at the moment if a pipe clip is used to prevent pull-out and keep it secure/close fitting to prevent leaking.

Re: I am an Activaist-v6 and a 2.1Estateerr
Time to sort out a patch that I have left FAR FAR to long....noticed at the last MoT (was small then) this has grown to twice it size (still only little)
(Below)
A small patch on the chassis leg has to be done first, where the rot from the outside of the inner wing has penetrated....then a second patch is needed to replace the cut away rotten metal of the inner wing.... (Below)
The inner wing patch also closes the footwell (you can see the carpet foam in the image above) with spot welds onto the upright section (from the bottom left corner up through the T)....so I will need to do some metal beating to get the shape correct. On a AX, no panels fit, they just used massive amounts of seam sealer....it is quite laughable really
Rot all cut away, a bit larger than needed to make it easy to make the patch/weld...treated with Bilt & Hamber rust converter, the Blue finish.(Below)

Cars moved about.....other than the handbrake cable to fit.... (fingers crossed/touch wood) I think the Sinker is nearly ready for its MoT....needs a road test for the brakes, not sure how that will happen.....thinks
AX in the garage to have its small patches (all cut & ready) added to it by the application of SPARKS & FIRE !. I do not like welding outside.
Reminder to self........ pull the foamed carpet out of the footwell

Well.... I remembered to "move" the foam out of the way......AS IF it was going to be that simple !
Foam cut from the area.....I will stick it back down with gaffer tape after the welding has been done.

Excellent work.
Take care welding indoors, there seems to be growing evidence that the fumes from mild steel welding isn't good for us. Quick Google, some waffle on the topic from the HSE:
https://www.hse.gov.uk/safetybulletins/ ... g-fume.htm
Thinking of rigging up some sort of rudimentary fume hood (bathroom fan and flexi hose probably) as, like you, I'd rather be inside for welding

I've just read that document right through and I have to say it just leaves me wondering how long it will be before the HSE issue a general warning:
"Living can be dangerous to your health"
I spent thirty+ years welding as and when I wanted, as and where it was necessary and in between servicing asbestos laden brakes and clutches, yes I may die of cancer in every organ in my body but likewise I may get run over by a bus. I enjoyed every minute and will continue to do so as long as I am able.

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Good work Alasdair
MoT man will be positively orgasmic when he sees that
I trust you took all necessary precautions to avoid the fumes

It is quite thin,,,,so you can see by "Seagull sh1t" quality welds

A vacuum cleaner with bag removed makes a good extraction set-up fan.MattBLancs wrote: 20 Oct 2024, 19:13 Excellent work.

Got a lot more umph than a bathroom fan to overcome resistance to air flow of crinkly hose.

Yes a good shout. A cooked hood is also generally a centrifugal fan setup so has a decent "head"Vic Evans wrote: 22 Oct 2024, 10:02A vacuum cleaner with bag removed makes a good extraction set-up fan.MattBLancs wrote: 20 Oct 2024, 19:13 Excellent work.

I've got a vac hose with a short length of metal tube attached which I clamp near the welding point with a magnet to extract fumes at source.
Works fine most of the time although a connected hood bodged from a tin can helps at times.
