Rescuing the C5 was I think the last for me and I never was a Merc fan.

Re: Classic for under £10K
I'm with you there Eric, the Stag was my last big project and now it's just essential work on my daily drivers. 10 years ago I may well have taken that Merc on at that price bcause I'm sure there would be money to be made if you do all the work yourself!! Those were the days!

That looks familiar Mick!
I still maintain that my GS was the best car I have had.

Re: Classic for under £10K
Also finishing today is this 1.9 GTi, a car I rallied quite successfully until its demise, if only I could afford it!! Currently at £8650 'reserve nearly met' suggests to me that £9k will buy it. If only......

Re: Classic for under £10K
A GS was my introduction to the Citroen flat four engine, the lady owner of Clearwell Castle bought one and very shortly after did the big ends in.
I stripped the engine and rebuilt it, replaced the crankshaft, interesting to find that it came from Citroen pre-assembled with all the con-rods.
That car is probably no longer in existence, nor is the Gloucester dealer the parts came from.

Re: Classic for under £10K
I read that the crankshaft was a Maserati one, with ball or roller bearings and was the heaviest part of the engine and that the little end pin (piston pin/wrist pin) can't remember the name now, was an interference fit.
Never stripped on but did change one, lifted it out unaided, not as heavy as an Imp engine.
Replacement engine clattered like the old one.
Lovely car but thirsty.

Re: Classic for under £10K
Yes roller bearings and the English name is gudgeon pin, no idea why.
There's another funny one the split pin they used to fit in the hole at the bottom of the clutch housing on a lot of old cars was called a giggle pin.

That's the one. Couldn't think of the name, not uncommon lately.

Wasn't gudgeon pin also known as wrist pin?

Re: Classic for under £10K
I think that's the American term, not used in the UK until quite late on., no mention of it my 1950s Newnes Motor Engineers Reference Book.

Re: Classic for under £10K
I had to look it up but only found references to piston pin and wrist pin, clearly foreign stuff.
