Yep Sidesaddle it was! I grew up watching him on The Billy Cotton Band Show and loved it from the first note!! A lot of his stuff is available on Youtube like this:

In its heyday, the Pickled egg jukebox would have themes to widen the net of musical education, find and try something new.
The Mandolin was one such theme. Follows on from Mandolin Rain by Bruce Hornsby and the Range here
Butch Baldassari (.nice name!).. Down to the river to pray.

This was used on the "Tyne Tugs" video, an instrumental version. Later in the video an a capella version by Alison Krauss is used as background to the footage of the river and the tugs and fits nicely with the story. Like Alison Krauss in general and also this version of the song, (its here if you want to have a listen https://youtu.be/flcrUnoAwVk)

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
The mandolin was featured prominently in the song When I'm Dead and Gone by McGuinness Flint in 1970. Here it is being sung by Tom McGuinness as part of the set list by The Manfreds, a band made up of former members of Manfred Mann.
Also in the video is Paul Jones (harmonica), Mike d'Abo (keyboards - standing) and Mike Hugg (keyboards - seated).
They've used a mandolin when I've seen them but here they use a mandolin soundalike.

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
It was:-
Time, time, time
See what's become of me
Time, time, time
See what's become of me
While I looked around for my possibilities
I was so hard to please
Look around
Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
Hear the Salvation Army band
Down by the riverside
It's bound to be a better ride
Than what you've got planned
Carry a cup in your hand
Look around
Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
Hang onto your hopes, my friend
That's an easy thing to say, but if your hopes should pass away
Simply pretend
That you can build them again
Look around
Grass is high
Fields are ripe
It's the springtime of my life
See upcoming rock shows
Get tickets for your favorite artists

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
Knew it was a cover, but wouldn't have known it was a Simon and Garfunkel song 1966 vintage.
-------------
WIth the "Get Carter" connection to North Blyth Staithes freshly to mind, and a hark back to Mandolin days in the Pickled Egg Jukebox archive, Selection number 8 has a bit of a resemblance in parts to the wonderful Get Carter theme.
Know your Alan Parsons Project

I can't remember the Get Carter theme. Alan Parsons, like Bryan Ferry, is from Washington. Never listened to any of his work though. Playing now.

Did you listen to that Mick?
I found it most disagreeable. Very harsh tones and higher frequencies than I expected you to tolerate.

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
That version is a bit raw, but it is played "live" by the Composer by the looks of it. The opening credits to the film itself is a more polished production, and fits perfectly with the introduction to the film. It aint the "Sound of Music" its a hard gritty film, and the discordant elements of the theme music are part of it. The rhythm slowing down as Carter reaches Newcastle Central Station over the River is just right.
Opening Credits and theme together here , better version in my opinion

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
That is indeed much more tolerable.
Won't be buying the CD though.
Watched it years ago and was impressed with the Gateshead multi-story scene, mainly as we often went to the shops and café there.
