Re: The Pickled Egg-Seasonal eclectic juke box open...

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Time for a freshening up of the old PE juke box for the festive season.

So how about a bit of poetry.......just to show how eclectic the selections can be....

music by? you may be surprised if you don't already know.

Pedantic rules.....not too long....6 mins max perhaps?

Haven't heard that nor seen the film previously but recall having to grind through it at school.

There's another film that is quite interesting that follows that one^
A documentary of the night train.

I was familiar with some of that - Dad worked for BR until 1953 when we moved to Whitby and lived half a mile from the station.

Yes that was my entertainment last night :!: Came across it because I was looking up a seasonal track which was played on Radio 3 yesterday from the composer who "did the music" for the Night Mail film.

Won't say who as it was a bit of a cheat how I spotted it.
Would not have known, not a composer I like other than one particular symphony.

Playlist on youtube Pickled Egg Juke Box-Christmas Selection

Sneaked one of my own in, probably more suitable for a reflective moment staring into the embers of the log fire than when the party is in full swing :-D

Recently discovered on YouTube.
A most unlikely collaboration that worked well for both of them.

I was aware of the album and quite surprised when it was announced but never bothered with it as I couldn't imagine it being any good, just shows how assumptions bite you in the bum.
Bought the CD a few days ago for 50p on eBay :)

Alison's expressions are wonderful on the second one :)

You know the well-repeated line in the Pogues "Fairytale of New York"

"...The boys of the NYPD choir were singing Galway Bay..."

I wondered if "Galway Bay" was a tune worth posting up on the PE jukebox.

Well it appears there are at least 2 incarnations of Galway Bay. The most popular, and the one most likely to be known by the NYPD and their actual, ficticious or metaphorical "choir" is this made popular by Bing Crosby. Personally.....I think its absolutely awful. Strange random link for today though the song (not Bing) does appear in the Oscar-winning "The Quiet Man" starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara which played out this afternoon on the TV :!: (yes what are the chances of that happening)

So unless there is a upswelling of demand from the Pickled Egg regulars, this version's not going on the jukie.

The other one is most famously sung by Dolores Keane

Well the Pickled Egg Seasonal selection is a bit sparse at the moment so how about a seasonal classic from the Nutcracker, probably the best known piece featuring the celesta, although Buddy Holly's "Everyday" did feature it as well.

and for those who like a bit of dance the Bolshoi are very close if not the best in the business.

Time to break the rules by one minute thirty-eight seconds.....but how can you fit a prog-folk-rock fantasy track into six minutes, sure the PE regulars will enjoy it in the background when they have heard it a few times!

its....Winter Wine from the land of grey and pink

For another rule breaker and another short and fanciful track how about 'White Rabbit' by Jefferson Airplane?

I thought of it when I saw 'Winter Wine'

They should prove to be popular selections should "Absinthe Night" be repeated :-D

Regards Neil

Just for those unfamiliar with "Absinthe Night" this is what happened last time
