306 dash/side/headlights not working

Post by bloodycitroen »

hi all, bit of a problem with my 95 306 XLD, everything works except the dashboard lights, side lights or headlights (dip or main beam) ! i have tried 3 different indicator stalks but still have the problem, has anyone got any ideas ? could it be a relay or fuse i don't know about ?

I thought of the dipdip resistor as that would knock out dip beam sometimes but never main.

Check rear tail lights work (or not) too

I'd check the fuses to start with in the car then move on to examine the larger ones in the engine bay.

Is anything else not working ? , I thought about a loose earth lead in the dash but that seems unlikely to just knock those items out.

I don't think its headlight relay as the sidelights would function without that.

checked all the fuses i can find in the car and under the bonnet, no tail lights front or rear, no headlights dip or main and no dash lights, central locking has also packed up ! everything else appears to work ! got me stumped

How strange.

Check the fusebox wiring as best as possible just to ensure a plug has not come adrift, unlikely but possible.

Then check main fusebox under bonnet as well, examine the wiring leading into it.

Unplug a sidelight bulb and use a multimeter on it (with the sidelights on) check to see if the earth or power is missing.

Alternative: There's a round cylinder about the size of a cigarette ligher, usually silver in the engine bay. It may have a plug with three wires on it. Its normally around / under the plastic cover for the engine bay fusebox on the wing or possibly near the radiator. Check its plugged in and not corroded. Also if possible check for power present here or otherwise.
Andy.

i have seen on a ZX lights all dead it turned out to be a heavy blue wire under the engine bay fuse box had shorted through,

it had been chafing against the lip on the inner wing till it shorted out and burned completely through

Have you actually got 12 volts on the fuses?

right, have traced the fault, it seems there is no power from under the bonnet to the fuse inside the car which in turn is giving no power to the stalk ! i assume this is the wiring behind the bumper that is at fault ? anyone have a wiring diagram they could mail me as i need to identify the wiring etc ?

I have some however it depends on the build code and a few other things plus its per item not a whole diagram without specific locations.

Did you check the main leads under the engine bay relay / fuse box as Malcolm suggested ? , a 306 and ZX are almost the same with their wiring locations especially under the bonnet, would not surprise me if it was the same loom actually.

plus i dont think any wires behind the bumper will be feeding the cab fuse box, more likely to just be feeding the front lighting and the likes

Its quite likely that a wire has corroded and become disconnected under the underbonnet fuse box, I have had it happen myself. I the problem is not there I would suggest running a lead from there to the battery.

Not being familier with your particular car I can't say exactly but if you have a circuit diagram it should show you if the fuse is connected directly to the battery, if it is do the same. I assume this is a permanantly live feed, if its ignition switched could be a faulty switch.

problem solved  thanks to everyone for there suggestions, it turned out to be the loom underneath the bumper, there are two thick white wires both of which have two factory made joints, these two wires appear to be the positive feed to and from the lighting fuse in the under bonnet fusebox ! the return feed had corroded at the connection and cut the feed from the fuse in the under bonnet fusebox to the dashboard fuse/relay for the lighting circuit and central locking system......at least that what appeared to be happening, i thought the white wires were all earth wires but these two are definitely positive feeds, anyway, full operation is restored  thanks again to all =D>

I know the wiring you mean as its sat at the bottom of the bumper / radiator usually in a plastic flexi tube. I had no idea it was lighting power though either.
