I am getting intermittent flashing snow and sports lights on my Mk2 Ciroen Xantia 1.9TD 1997 version with 140K on the clock.
As a first step I want to change the AL4 gearbox oil, the Lexia3 records it as an intermittent pressure regulation fault
I went to a source I had used previously i.e Peugeot dealer near Brent Cross London, who had then supplied Esso LT71141 with their pug part number 9736.22. On this occasion however I was given a similiar looking but only 1 litre sized bottle claiming to be Mobil ATF 4HP20 AL4 gearbox oil. The part number on it is 9730.AE, having read a few threads I am now concerned that I may have been sold unsuitable variety. The colour of this oil is golden similiar to engine oil
Would the knowledgeable ones say that I should return these bottles and look for the old Esso variety or if it is indeed a correct substitute.
The last thing I would like is to grind the clutches away thus storing serious issues for the future.
As always much obliged and kind regards,
Masood
AL4 Automatic gearbox oil, now Peugeot part number 9730.AE?

Thanks for the image Clogzz, I thought I saw these types on flea bay so tried to stick with a known distributer who has provided the genuine oil previously. If your's is proper stuff then I am very suspicious if what I have been given is OK to use on the AL4 boxes as it makes no mention of Esso or Mobil LT71141 even though I have been charged almost 50 pounds for 4 bottles.
What I have look
like in this photo
and this one
showing new and old spare part numbers

It's not filthy at all Lexi, I can tell you it has incredible detergent properties!!!lexi wrote:Same filthy oil at the same filthy price
Price is a bit on the wicked side though, I agree.
And yes, this is the right stuff... Just in a smaller bottle and thus more expensive...
Maybe we should all club together and buy a 205l drum of it and sell it to members at a discount?

The price of all engine oil has shot up but this stuff is crazy. It is a semi synth gear oil man. Small quantity production will be blamed.
OR niche market and bend over.
