306 Heater blower failure

Post by MikeT »

I plan to look at a Phase3 1.6 that's got a non-working heater blower. All I know diagnostic wise is the blower will run with direct power applied and that fuses have been checked.

Ideally, I'd like to be armed with the relevant wiring diagram(s) but any hints, tips and pointers would welcome.

First step would be to check the blower rheostat/resistor which is hidden inside the air intake to the heater.Lift the bonnet and remove the rubber cover in the bulk head gully near side.

Thanks Oldpug. Are tools required for that looksee? Another poster tells me the relay(s) are also suspect but I don't have a map for those or the fuses and a wiring diagram would be extremely helpful if anyone could link/provide one?

No not as far as I remember, you might need a small torx but not sure.

Tip: Stop wipers when they are upright then remove (as above) the scuttle trim just enough to see into the intake on the passenger side. :)

There's that scary word - scuttle. It's not sealed to the 'screen with all the problems they give like the Xantia, is it?

Cheers for the wiper tip!

Sorry I forgot to say you have to remove the wiper arms and the plastic grill that goes from one side to the other.13mm spanner and torrix screw driver. The rheostat is just push and turn by hand. Sometimes I`ve seen the relay on the fuse board get hot and burn.

There was no resistor or resistor pack under the scuttle, nor on the blower. Looks more like the Xantia transistor block to me.

We did find no power to fuse 21 (30A). Where does this feed from?

Ho, ho, ho, Haynes strikes again. The above is incorrect for this car (W-Reg Ph3) which has A/C and automatic temperature control. No wonder I wasn't finding continuity between the terminals.

Autodata put me on the right track. F22(10A) is the ignition switched feed to the heater blower relay, which is supposed to be Relay#2 but I found it was actually Relay#3 on this car which was unpopulated. Once a relay was fitted, power is relayed from MaxiFuse1 to F20(30A), great. But still no blowers etc.

When this car first came to me, I ran the Diag over it but got some french mumbo-jumbo when I interrogated the A/C ECU. Toby determined it translated as a failure to communicate which is not surprising if there was no power at F20. With that now fixed I'll give the Diag another go when the owner comes over next, hopefully with better results.

Anyone know where the A/C ECU lives in these cars and what I could check next?

is there two or just one transistors on the speed control unit Mike,

i scraped a 406 a while ago which was non air con and had the same style control unit as the XANT, but it only has one transistor fitted, and the bolt and leg holes not drilled through,

We didn't open it up to look, just saw there was a large heatsink attached. PM replied to, did you get it this time, Malcolm?

I noticed the heatsink is larger and a different shape to the Xant. Also, according to the wiring diagram, it uses a resistor in the circuit somewhere. I can't see anything transistorised so suspect the heatsink is for the large number of resistors.

Anygood at frisbee, Malcolm? :P

Please see six posts up, I hit EDIT instead of Quote and added to the existing post rather than create anew. My excuse, having some sleepless nights the last few weeks.
