I've ordered a new master cylinder of eBay which should be delivered by the end of the week. I went for the Delphi which is as per earlier link. Researching this, it looks to be an alternative unit for a Bendix system so I'm taking a risk that it will fit onto the Bosch servo. Dimensionally it is almost identical +/- 0.3mm so I will have to do some further measurements when it arrives. If it's no good, I've only lost £20.
In the past I've substituted non-standard parts when the correct stuff was not available or too expensive ( Ford escort air filter for a Renault 5, 80% cheaper!! ), never though, I might add, for something that could be deemed to be so safety critical, however if I'm not completely happy with it's performance it will be replaced for the real thing.
I'll update when it arrives and is fitted.
Thanks again to all that have contributed. Your ideas and advice have been very much appreciated.

Re: Synergie - Sinking brake pedal
Waits with bated breath for a decade to find out if this fixed it... I guess so otherwise he'd have been back
(I have the same symptoms right now so about to try some master cylinder testing)

If you find nothing wrong with the master cylinder there's another cause for sinking pedal dealt with in previous posts on here. Search for ''ABS'' or ''secondary bleeding''
