as Paul say's i never remove the suspension cylinder, just fully depresureise the rear suspension,

i do this with the car on stands, bleed valve open, place a block of wood on the trolley jack under and across the hub of the rear disc and the brake calliper, and gently jack the arm up and let it down two or three times,

and never remove the ABS sensor just unplug it,

the diference between 306 and the likes rear suspension and XANT's, is the 306 has torsion bar suspension and XANT's two indipendant trailing arms only conected to each other by an anti roll bar

The full kit seems to be getting expensive these days.
You should be able to get away with replacing just the bearings and seals.

Prices March 2010: GSF Car parts.
512PC0080 (old p/n N42350) REAR ARM BEARING................8.25
512PC0100 (old p/n N42362) REAR ARM BEARING SEAL.......1.25
512PC0050 Rear Arm Kit ....................................................38.90

Here is a link to the procedure for the BX some of which may translate to the Xantia
http://www.mars.dti.ne.jp/~ynar/bxorg_a ... /m07e.html

A useful test is to get your ear fairly close to the rear arm pivot whilst jacking the rear end up --- you may be able to hear creaking from worn out bearings as the arm opens out.

Hi. In my Xantia the inner side of the tyres are wearing. When I see from behind the wheels are lean outwards. But there is no noise coming and no bearing play as well. Anyway when inspect the alloys, there is a dimple in each of the wheels which I think the car must have gone over a hump may be at higher speed. Can the subframe get de aligned due to a shock like that. The car has done only 93000kms. The results sheet of the wheel alignment is attached.

Chetiya.

it is very very unlikely a bump can cause one or both wheels to lean out,

when the arm bearing fail it in not always posible to feel any play/movment in the arms, as tghe anti roll bar is bolted directly onto both arms with no link rods,

also they do not alway make any noise,

im sure both you trailing arms have got bearings colapsing

Many thanks Citronut. There is another matter. When I measure the hight from the ground up to the mud guard edge, the right side is about 1 inch lower than the left. Also the wheels have moved towards left side. Can the subframe move.ImageImage

I have a tail-twitch in the handling of my Xantia during cornering which I now suspect is a swing-arm bearing. I also have a 'parts-car' and went through the removal procedure on that car as a test before I tackle my runner. This parts-car swing-arm bearings look good; is there any way to bench-test or identify visually? Also if these bearings are serviceable, any reason a non-hydractive swing arm could not be swapped into a hydractive car? Cheers

Do the rear wheels lean inwards at the top? The taper roller bearings are pre-loaded using shims, not by tightening the large bolt. The shims are available from Citroen. The clearance needs to measured between the bearing and the sub-frame and then the relevant shims inserted. This is done the the outer edge of the swing arm.
Over time the shims wear and the pre-load gets less.

Notice the BX is still top the list but sadly gone

Hi Pete
No appreciable lean in, maybe a tiny amount, nothing like my trusty BX TZD when its arm bearings went (still wish I had that one... :-) )
No indication of any shim material between the bearing and the sub-frame...
Cheers, Simon
