Keep my Xantia Alive Doner Car Request

Post by 1080 »

My 1993 Xantia with just 38k on its 1.9 XUD diesel, normally aspirated, a green one needs help. I'm hoping to either buy another one with broken mechanicals, but excellent bodywork. Or failing this, invest around £600 in a concours respray. Lifelong connections in the motor trade will make this happen. 12 months ago, in a moment of madness, I came out of retirement and am slowly starting up as a French car repair specialist again.
Hoping to do mostly BX/Xantia/AX/CX etc as I've loads of 1980/90s experience/factory training workshop foreman type of thing...

My latest job was a Suzuki Alto restoration. India, not France, was where this car was made, but how I enjoyed making that neglected heap like new again.

So hopefully someone has/knows of any Xantia in lovely condition body-wise, but beyond economic
mechanical repair?

I found a late model 2.0 auto, but it has had welding to the inner sills, so I bet the door hinge support area is rotten too. Thank you in advance.

Doner Car means I wanna buy, NOT I want a free car :-)
Up to £1.5k for the nicest broken one.

I've got one of those, in the form of a Nissan Pixo... Been in the family since new and still going very strong...

Good luck on the Xantia adventure :)

For a concourse respray I think you need to add another zero to the price.

i would agree, unless you've already got all the necessary equipment and your going to do it yourself or get it done at "mates rates" in exchange for your assistance elsewhere. Good Mk1's are hopefully still out there, my 94 plate was still solid when i sold it on.

I still miss my xantia, nothing beats that comfort! so occasionally i look them up on line, i found this, it's not exactly what you wanted & despite the fuel filter housing already being replaced i'd be looking to replace that for the starting problem. https://www.gumtree.com/p/citroen/citro ... 1474012202 . Not a ploy but i know of a front wing (in "below average" condition) that you could probably have that would fix the dent, although the damaged one is probably fixable rather than breaking the factory seal.
Music keeps me going.

I go to a body shop once a week, they have the panels from my DS. I do the grunt works, and the chap that owns it, does the top coat.

Firstly, the two pack paint costs about £500. I've used about eight cans of filler, at £28 a can. The primer costs around £60, and there's the undercoat.

Most of the filler comes off, largely on me. I supply the face masks, but the tea's free.

I have spent eighty hours- yes, I've counted them- and it's not quite finished. I reckon another twenty, more or less. At £50/hour, plus profit, that's a total of around eight grand.

And this, was for a car which wasn't concours, but was reasonable. And, no rust, at all.

So, £8000- £10000 is not all that far off, for a full house repaint, including everything. (And I stripped the body, first).

What "parts"/areas of your car are the problem ? ......a totally Rust free Xantia is a hard find these days..... you may need to source from a number of different cars.
