DS3 Apple CarPlay Display problem

Post by Zefiren »

Hi there,
I’ve got a problem with my DS3 screen but only inside Apple CarPlay which leads me to think it is a software issue. I got it diagnosed by Arnold Clark but I don’t trust it very much at this point as they said the unit was damaged... how, if it works fine for everything else (apart from sensors, of course...)? They said 700 for replacement with a new one... but I can’t see that being the problem.

My phone is an iPhone 11 but when I tried it in a C3 cactus 2019 courtesy car last time the issue wasn’t present, it displayed everything correctly without cutting off the bottom.

The software versions I have installed are
System version SMEG6.4A.R10
Bluetooth 1.2.0
Display 42.03
All seemingly dated 16-06-17.

Does anyone have any experience with a problem like this? Or know if my system may perhaps have updates available that would fix it?

The update you have is, I believe, the lat update for this system. The SMEG systems have now been dumped in favour of the NAC systems, so unlikely they will be updating the SMEG units anymore.

As for your problem, this has affected several users, but no there are no solutions I am aware of. Did you perform the last firmware upgrade yourself? Have you not noticed this before?

I didn’t update it apart from the maps, the car came with this system when I bought it in August last year.

So if the case is that there have been no solutions, does that include replacement of the screen? I have been recommended by the dealership to get the screen replaced, but their price is £700 which I’m not ever gonna go ahead with.

No that’s a bit of bull to be honest and a typical response. The screen cannot suddenly change the resolution of the image. It gets the data from the SMEG unit. So can you answer my question as to has this always been displayed like this since you have had it or only after your map update?

The reason I ask is that this has almost 100% happened after a firmware update. Yours is a 2016 model (probably built even earlier) and that firmware was only released in 2017. I can tell you the exact build date if you pop your VIN up.

So this has likely happened after the last firmware update or map update.

I didn’t have an iPhone before the map update, so unfortunately it’s always been like this as far as I know, but that was after I performed the update.

Outside of CarPlay, it worked fine before and works fine after the map update, so I didn’t notice a change.

Could I perhaps go back to a different version? Or could it be configured to fix it? I’m guessing former is more likely to be possible, or a reinstall of the system?

I’m not sure honestly, only found out about the system updates yesterday so don’t know what’s possible with these

Ok so no, you cannot downgrade a firmware - not possible.

So it's a known fact that when you update to certain firmware versions, sou must get it calibrated at a dealer. They will need to connect to the PSA servers to correct certain issues and cure some of the problems that result from updating to major firmware. They will charge you a diagnostic fee to do this of about £90, but the ECU will generally be locked in secure mode, so can't really be done by Diagbox in offline mode.

There's no other solution with these - other problems can be incorrect logo, poor radio reception, echo on hands free, missing radio bands, issues with parking assistance etc.

Hey - reviving the thread as I was curious as to whether there had been any progress with this? I have just purchased a DS 3 2017 model with the same problem.

Thanks,

It may be the newer IOS software that could be causing the screen size issue - with the older SMEG systems that used smaller screens than the later units. It's really difficult to pin point the issue given the hardware and software of the Head Unit in the car and Apple's Software that is constantly being updated.

One of the OPs that had this issue said the problem disappeared when trying the same phone on a later 2019 Cactus which would of had the NAC system. These are the later systems, much improved and with larger displays. I have none of these issues with Carplay on my Aircross that also uses the later systems. So I suspect it may be a problem specific to the SMEG units coupled with the Apple updates.
