Emyway screen problem

Post by Vic Evans »

Hello all. Great forum.
I'm a new member living in France with 2 LHD French cars so this place will be very usefull.
My immediate problem is the LCD Nav. screen of our 2014 C4 Millenium model bought new here. It's not the touch screen version.
A few months ago the screen was covered in coloured vertical; stripes, then kept flashing, then went blank, then info visible under stripes, then worked as normal for about a month. It's now showing the left hand part of the screen 3 times when switched on & then alternates between flashing stripes over information & occasionally almost normal.
Our local Citoen agent says it's the screen & having checked the part number tells us it can be repaiired at a cost of about €500 against about €1,000 for a new screen.
The fact it sometimes worked fine puts doubt in my mind that it's not just a loose connection but I can't find out how to access the screen to check this.
This morning it's just showing the LH half of the info.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, and :welc: to the forum. The only advice I can offer you is to ask you to post up the vehicle VIN here (which will, for security reasons, be obscured so only Forum staff can read it). Then a Moderator can look up exactly what your car had when she rolled out of the factory, and dig out the correct information and diagrams.

Don't want to sound pushy on this but my missus is going to take her car to the garage next week so , if nobody knows that the problem is the screen itself can anyone tell me how to get it out to check the connections before she does. I've tried lifting out the two 'fillet' pieces each side but these seem to tucked up under the heater vent & lower panel so won't 'flip' out.
My wife reminds me that it worked fine for about a month after the garage presumably removed it to check the serial no. on the screen so I'm still thinking it might be a dodgy connection.
Sorry to be a bore but I'd love to check the conns. myself before committing to a €500 + 'repair'.

I've been decorating, so catching up on posts today....

Ok, so you'll need a set of trim removal tools (flat bladed plastic or similar)

First follow the instructions here for correct disconnection and later reconnection of the battery and dor correct shutdown and reawakening of the BSI)

BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure Failure to do this can brick the screen / RT6 Head Unit as the power must be removed before disconnecting the screen!

To get to it you'll need to remove the central vent:
RT6 Screen A.PNG
Unclip the central air vent (1) (at "a") using trim tools.
Remove the central vent (1).
Next you'll need to remove the multiplexed Control Panel:
RT6 Screen B.PNG
RT6 Screen C.PNG
Detach the embellishers (1) ( as "a") using trim tools..
Remove the finishers (1).
Unclip the trim (2) ( as "b") using trim tools.
Release the trim (2).
RT6 Screen D.PNG
RT6 Screen E.PNG
Detach the lamp (3) ( as "c") using trim tools.
Disconnect the connector ( as "d").
Remove:
  • The lamp (3)
  • The trim (2)
Remove the bolts (4).
Detach: The multifunction control panel (5).
RT6 Screen F.PNG
RT6 Screen G.PNG
Disconnect the connectors ( as "e").
Remove:
The multifunction control panel (5)
Remove:
  • The bolts (2)
  • The multifunction display (1)
Refit in reverse and lastly, follow the remainder of the procedure to reconnect the battery. Note: if you have to have the door open to work, then flip the door latch inside the end of the door to fool the BSI into thinking the door is shut. If you don't do this, then the BSI will keep the car networks triggered and prevent the ECUs on the network form going to sleep.

Many thanks Marc for the time spent & detail provided. It's greatly appreciated & now I know what's involved.
I'm sure I can follow the instructions provided although the reference to 'bricking' things is a bit scary !
The problem I have is that the local Citroen garage owner says he's trying to get some sort of deal from PSA as this might be a common fault with screens produced about 2014. Have you any info on this ? Having now seen what needs to be dismantled to access the connections I'm reluctant to do so in case I leave any tell tale marks of my intervention which could prejudice any possible claim.
The garage says it will have to send the screen away for 'repair' so given that this could take well over a week during which time there will be a gaping hole in the dash with lose wiring will the car still be driveable?
Our garage bloke is a nice guy but given the language problem on technical stuff it would be nice to hear from you.
Thanks in advance

Hi Vic

There are plenty of faults listed for the system - but relate to specific fault codes - however most of the faults simply point to the MFD itself and Citroen do not repair these - they send them off.

Make sure you fully understand any cost implications as sometimes Citroen will make a gesture - although your vehicle is out of warranty now so consider the full cost of replacement. The screens can be obtained on the aftermarket - but you do need to find the correct one. In your case, the part number for the screen itself is: 9804707380. These are £1307.00 inc. UK VAT ex. fitting.

They can be found second hand on the market, a used example here in France for 350 Euros:

Once again, many thanks Marc.
Over here garages are obliged to fit 2nd hand parts if the client asks so I'm thinking it'll be worth a punt on the screen you mentioned.
Thanks to you I'm now armed to 'do battle' with my local Citroen guy so I'll ask him if his garage will fit it. This way there'll be no great time loss of the car to us & he'll have the gear & knowledge to do the job.
The garage is shut on Monday but I'll let you know how I get on asap.
Thanks again

Yes, do let us know.

I can't be certain, but sometimes in common with flat screen monitors for PCs, it can be an issue with the ribbon cables working loose or the electronic housing. In other cases it is the graphic chip that is fried and as they can't test these screens in-house, they send them off to Continental or other authorised repairer for repair - or will just supply a new one at a reduced price (hopefully)!

Hi Marc.
Finally got to see our garage chap today & armed with the info you kindly suppied I was able to talk turkey with him.
The upshot is that he assures me the whole job, removal, repair & reinststament can be done for about 500€ with guarantees .
It seems silly not to let him carry out the work for not a lot more than a 2nd hand screen so the car is going in next monday for them to remove the screen & send it off for repair. Unless the repair company says there's nothing wrong with the screen I'll probably never know if the problem is a dodgy connection but at least it'll be fixed with guarantees.
I'll let you know when it's finally done.
Many thanks
Vic

Excellent - I quite agree Vic. You will at least have peace of mind that you have a new screen and that it will have the latest software / firmware applied and fitted for you. I hope it all works out.

My wife has just picked up the C4 & says the repaired screen is fine.
Total cost inc. removal & refitting 564€ (about £480) guaranteed for one year.
Thanks again for all of your help.
