Rattle in relay engine

Post by Sergeantcookie »

I have a rattle coming from the engine. It's more noticeable when idling or the engine is cold. I have included a video for you to look at. It's a 2015 relay 2.2hdi with 99k on the clock.

Video can be found here

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Can you post up your VIN (automatically masked from public view) - there are various 2.2 engines and then we'll be able to determine what exactly you have. I will be able to read it.

Ok, so you have a RELAY III VAN LONG WHEELBASE H2 TYPE 16 2.2 HDI 130 PUMA C Manual gearbox 6.

I thought this was going to be an easy one seeing as you identified the area and pointed to the suspect part - turns out that 9808676280 is the engine!

So the most obvious thing that site on top there is the cylinder head / rocker valves......

Okay... As I'm not massively mechanically minded I don't know what is what but I've had a few theories as to what the problem is and now you've added another theory. Some have said it's possibly the cam chain, some say the aux belt and you say the rocker valves or such. If it were your theory am I looking at a big/expensive job?

Please forgive me and my non knowledge of this

Give it a little while - so others can check out the video and add their comments. I'm more on the technical / electrical side, but I'll point my colleague to your post to get his opinion. I just put up those diagrams so you could get a better idea of what's underneath that area and I'm not suggesting it is the rockers, so don't want you to get stressed.

Always difficult to tell from a video. Doesn't sound like a mechanical noise to me, might just be something loose, you might be able to tell a bit better with the engine cover off - a long stick applied to various bits of the engine and pressed to your ear can help to identify exactly where the noise is coming from. Does it appear to be engine speed related? Is it worse under load or when when not working it hard? Don't know much about this engine, it's a Ford unit - I had a quick look at some Transit forums, but most were about older engines.

It's more prominent when on tick over and also when engines cold. At speed it's not that bad, though with the wind noise that could be blocking it out, making it unnoticeable. Under load it's no different/no worse

Sounds like something loose, small and lightweight "flapping" or being thrown around randomly.
Doesn't sound like a regular tapping of valve or rocker.
Not sure whether it would be possible to lift the rocker cover and run the engine (could be messy?) to investigate, but worth checking everything external (eg belts, exhaust, covers/baffles...) first.

I would concur with Richard and Chris, sounds like something external to the engine. Possible aux belt tensioner?

Ah, I had assumed that was the back of the engine, but I think in fact it is the RH side? In which case that is the timing chain cover, and there's a possibility that it's the chain or the tensioner rattling. In which case you need to get it looked at pronto.... It could well be the aux belt tensioner as this is on the same end of the engine, and can rattle pretty well.

Thank you for all the replies. I have dropped it into the garage tonight so will keep you all updated as to what the problem is. Hopefully it's a cheap fix but I fear it will be the expensive side.

Yes it's the RH side. A few people have said possibly the aux belt, hopefully it is just that but time will tell.

So I've spoke with the garage where it's at. They've told me it needs a new timing chain and they need it for a few days. No idea how much its going to cost me. Far from happy as its my work vehicle and without that I can't work and so work aren't happy either :(

doesn't sound like timing chain to me. I concurred with Peter and thought Aux Belt tensioner.

Hire a vehicle or buy a Banger that you can get enough of your stuff in to get by with if you're gonna trust the garage...

....they may be telling true, but my experience of the trade stinks.
