Heated Seats stopped working C5 x7

Post by petef »

They were ok yesterday - my sister in law complained about the heat in her seat which had been left switched on. But now neither seat will heat up - nothing on any setting. Fuse G37 is fine, so I don't know what to look at next, any suggestions? Will Lexia give a clue - can't remember if it does stuff like seats?

Be aware that there are 2 G37 fuses! - But in either case it's not this one you need to be checking.

In fact they are fuses:
G38 (25A) - Driver's Heated Seat and
G39 (40A) - Passenger´s heated seat - HIFI amplifier - Cielo (where fitted)

Both these are in the BH12 cabin fuse box that contains 12 fuses in a row and range from G29 to G40.

Don't get this confused with the BHF1 cabin fuse box that contains 5 fuses (G36 to G40)

These can be hard to see as they are to the side and above the BSI.

We've been here before Marc - conflicting info from different sources. My C5 handbook - edition 10/2007 says fuse G37. My Revue Technique Manual agrees with you - fuses 38 and 39. As both seats failed together I am inclined to agree with the handbook ie only one fuse. Additionally I removed G38 and, as per handbook, drivers seat stopped moving.
Anyway must be something else......?

Indeed - the merry-go-round it would seem and translation possibly!

I've checked the maxi fuses and these relate to MF02 - but that should be ok as MF02 supplies the whole of the BHF5 and the BFH12 boxes, so there would undoubtedly be other issues if that has gone toes up.

Check Fuse F11 in the BSI. This relates to the low current supply - but more of a check than anything else.
X7 BSi Fuses.PNG
However the only other thing I can see it the Engine Fuse Box - as that supplies the power to Fuse G37 - so is G37 getting any power? If the driver's seat is moving then it won't be that.

Very odd that both are not working - of course engine needs to be running of course - just to rule that out.

Ok, I got it wrong - the passenger heated seat is still working. So I thought the next step would be to check the switch on the drivers side. Problem is it won't come out. Checking on Citroen Service the switch is part 16 - 8906HR - on the appropriate exploded parts diagram. This will almost pull out, but not completely, from the switch plate - item 5. In turn I cannot seem to budge the switch plate even though it would seem to just clip in. Can any body help with the right technique? Surely the whole side cover doesn't have to come off?

You might need to remove the front seat to get proper access to the seat side trim, then:
X7 Seat.PNG
Unclip: The side trim (1) ( as "a"), using trim removal tools.
Disconnect the connectors ( as "b", "c").
Remove: The side trim (1).
Unclip the trim (2) ( as "d").
Remove the trim (2).

I saw this too Marc in Citroen Service. Can't believe the seat has to come out to change a switch.......that switch plate or the switch alone must come out - but how.........?

They'll be rheostats and then a control switch somewhere inside no doubt.

6370 Is the Heated Front Seat Switch Command
6380 Is the rheostat info
MC76 & 77B are the earths.

I suspect the switches are released from inside the side trim plate and clip in from the underneath, necessitating removal of the side panel. But as there are trim clips on the underside of the side panel, these are nearly impossible to access without removing the seat first Pete.

Not having done this, I can't say whether with a fine trim removal plastic tool, you would be able to lever out the rheostat switch as I can't see how and where it is clipped in - or whether there is enough wiring to release it up through the side plate if you did manage it.

Update:
Seat Switch.PNG
Scrub that last bit Pete - from looking at an actual picture of the switch, you can see that it looks like the wiring plug connector has to be removed first - especially as the connector is at the side and not underneath - so trying to pull it out might damage it....

So looks like a seat out. If you want to know how to do that let me know.

Finally had the seat checked out by my local auto electrician and the switch replaced in case that was the issue. Sad news - the heating elements have failed in the drivers seat. Strange thing is I cannot find any reference in Citroen Service to the front seat covers/padding/heating elements etc. Plenty of info on the front seat frame as in above posts, and also details of the rear seats and covers. Do you have anything Marc? Seems like each seat material and colour may have it's own part number. And also it looks like the elements might be integrated into the leather cover and effectively not replaceable. Has anyone successfully replaced the seat heating elements in an x7? My auto electrician , who I trust, is willing to have a go if it is possible. He has done the same job on Mercs and Bimmers so is no stranger to what's involved.

Hi Pete. Bad news on that front, the heated seat pads are inside the base cushion and the backrest. I have the resistance values for testing each, but they are not sold as separate parts, which is why replacements are so expensive.
seats.PNG
Now, for your driver seat and backrest, :yikes:

Driver Cushion Lining (886459) £2,089.58
Driver Backrest (8876QT) £2,593.01

Although not overweight (by much) I shall now be going on a diet so as not to knacker mine up!

A chap on C6 owners did a partial strip down with the intention of repairing his heated pad on the cushion on his leather C6 driver seat - but had to abort ¾ of the way through, as the discovered the pads were bonded to the seats!

They are designed to go under cloth / removable covers - no good for leather.

But on the seat font, I know EDC5 bought a complete set of front / rear leather seats for his part leather exclusive and get the door cards too. I think he secured the lot for £600 ish delivered.....
