C3 - 2005 - SX - Radiator Fan Problem

Post by canbulatemre »

Hello there. First of all, I apologize for my bad English. I have a radiator fan problem in my vehicle. The fan does not operate when it reaches 90 degrees. When it is 100 degrees, all the overheating lights on the console are lit and a warning sound is heard. That's not always the case. Sometimes it works. When it works, it works at fast speed. I tested the fan relay in the photo, it works. But the fan usually does not work. I can not take the test because it is too expensive new radiator fan in Turkey. Is there a method I can test?

Your vehicle identification number.

You can find it on the outside lower corner of the windscreen in the little window cut out. It will begin VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] and is 17 alphanumeric in length.

Ok, so I've deleted all the unnecessary info and replaced the image with the complete VIN from the last 8 digits you supplied.

So you have the C3 5 DOOR SALOON 1.4i 75 (TU3JP) 4-SPEED AUTOMATIC GEARBOX.

I'll take a look at the fan system shortly.

Ok, so here is the information regarding the cooling system fitted to the C3 MK I with AL4 Automatic box:

So the fan on this vehicle is the 300 Watt version as you have Air Conditioning. It is also a variable speed fan (chopper). On slow speed, the fan will start when the engine temperature reaches 96 ° C. The speed will increase as needed, but will reach maximum speed at 105 ° C. So the fan won't start at 90° C as you said - that is normal. So the fan should start working on slow speed if you have the air conditioning switched on.

Do a test - when the engine has been off and is cool, start the car and switch the A/C OFF - the fan should not be working. Then switch the A/C on - it should start on slow speed. If that works, so far so good. You have already said it works on fast speed - so it is unlikely to be the relay.

I would suspect the Thermostatic Water Temperature Sensor is bad, so try replacing that.

I tested the fan relay and it works. Engine water reaches 100 degrees. I checked it with the OBD. The relay is activated when the fan should run, but the fan does not start. I put the relay in and out a couple of times. He's working. This doesn't always work.

It's going to be a matter of eliminating and testing - but check the wiring connections to the fan motor itself (but warning - be aware that the fan can suddenly start with the engine not running - in order to cool the engine - so watch your fingers!). Sometimes there can be a break in a wire that corrodes over time giving an intermittent signal.
