laptop and car not talking

Post by KennyW »

Got 'new' laptop for diagbox, but can't get diagbox to talk to car.

The green connection light on program (top right corner) appears and disappears.

I'm trying to find what should be on or off in order for Diagbox to work right ?

Also I'm trying to confirm what is exactly in the Laptop.

It is a dell latitude E6500 running winodws 7 pro, 4gb Memory, Intel 2 core processor 300gb hardrive.

As far as I can tell Diagbox loaded fine.

Any ideas help tips would be gratefully accepted.

Kenny - can you pop up the dell service tag so I can see what the exact specs are please. It will be underneath the laptop, usually on a label and say service tag or express code

Make sure you install Windows Net framework 3.5 here from Microsoft's site. That needs to be installed for Windows 7.

Win 7 needs to be a 32 bit installation, not 64 bit.

^ It will still work fine if using Diagbox on a 64bit system - just not Lexia & PP2000 encapsulated apps.

There's plenty on these threads about it - but I'll jut reiterate the usual suspects:

When you initially installed DB 7.02 confirm the product was activated.
If OK, then backup the Licence file (C:\AWROOT\BIN\FI\APPDIAG.SYS) - copy this file somewhere safe so it can easily be restored later.

Applying your updates:
  • Ensure the Diagbox application is closed
  • Launch only the single update you want to install
  • Follow the instructions.
  • When the update has completed, restart the Laptop / PC
  • Launch Diagbox
  • The update will then apply - allow it to complete.
  • Close Diagbox
  • Repeat this process for EACH update individually
  • Don't go past 7.62

The version of Diagbox will be displayed in the top right hand corner of the programme.

<ake sure you network / wifi adapter is working, but ensure you disconnect from any live wifi internet locations and make sure you do not have it set to connect automatically - if it does, the PSA server may deactivate the software or worse.

When installing, make sure all firewall request are allowed - if you don't, the COM ports will be blocked and the USB devices will not communicate with the VCI.

Thanks Marc,

Computers, laptops etc are my least knowledgeable area. But I think there is conflict between certain programs on the laptop.

Still not found what caused my HP notebook to stop working, the message was a unlicenced wifi connection was blocking windows loading or windows was refusing to load because of this.

Diagbox was working fine before this.

I'm going to completely clean the laptop and reload to factory settings on both to see what happens.

Ok, so be aware that if you are reinstalling Windows 7, make sure you have your licence key for Windows available and ensure you install service pack 3 and all updates. This can take hours, because you can't apply lots of the updates until a certain number of other updates have been installed. You are basically trying to play catch up with years of Windows updates. Keep updating and restarting the laptop as needed, then keep checking the updates again until there are no more.

When you have it all updated - take a backup of the windows Registry before you install Diagbox.

I'm not sure about unlicensed WiFi connection - but you may have a message about the version of Windows not being licensed or activated. That's while you'll need your licence key. You should have this on the windows product activation key label on the laptop somewhere.

Well got windows 7 pro running and all relevant DELL drivers and updates installed.

Diagbox loaded and tried out it spoke to the car at first but then stopped communicating.

What level of Java 7 is required or can I use the java 8 version current available to download now ?

I'm wondering if this is the problem.

Thoughts everyone.

On Monday I shall speak to Jim at Easy diagnostics about this irritating problem.

Did you install .Net framework 3.5? That is required for Windows 7 running Diagbox Kenny. Java isn't necessary. .Net 3.5 can prevent the VIN detection from working. I think I linked to it before, but here it is again:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... aspx?id=21

I suspect your intense CPU running is to do with Windows Update! That can be very resource intensive and I suggest you disable updates if you are not using it for anything other than diagnostics. It can slow Diagbox to the point of it barely running.

!) Go into Control Panel, then select System & Security, then Windows Update, then on the left hand side from the options choose 'Change Settings', then on the drop down menu, select 'Never check for Updates' and apply and save the changes.
2) Next, from the start menu, type RUN, then in the command dialogue box, type services.msc
3) An alphabetical list will open up, scroll down neat the bottom until you find Windows Update
4) Double Click Windows Update and from the next screen near the middle section you will see 'Startup Type'. It will already be set to 'Automatic Delayed'.
5) Select the drop down, and from the list choose Disabled.
6) Whilst there press the STOP button to stop the service running now.
7) Slect Apply / OK and that's permanently stopped Windows update until you change these back again.

Yes, Net 3.5 is there.

Have changed windows updates as suggested.

Next to the car to try it again.

Well it didn't work properly again, but I may have resolved the problem.

There was an error message relating to windows updates which I have now solved.

This may have been responsible.

Here's hoping

Well I was wrong. can't get the windows 7 pro to work properly. It would appear to be the sim.exe is not activating. No idea why not.

But the good news got the HP notebook working and it talks to the car, so managed to sort out new DPF.

Next the suspension height after changing both wishbones. Height all to pot. Car compensating for the knackered wishbones.
