Post by Peter.N. »

I'm pretty familiar with Citroen hydraulics as I ran hydropnumatics for around 30 years and always managed to repair them myself. The C5 I have is metal sprung, how they get a ride like that from springs utterly amazes me. This is the first diesel I have had with a DPF, no I lie, I had a Mk1 C5 but I just topped the Eolys up and it took care of itself, all the other cars since have been non DPF models.

I am going to have to get to grips with it, it doesn't help that there doesn't seem to be a workshop manual available for it, at least not in paper form. Does anyone know if the downloadable ones are any good?

Can anyone tell me how much Eolys it takes and do I need the expensive plastic pipe and fittings to fill it?

The additive is available in 1 Lt and 3 Lt quantities and yes you need the filling kit. Some come with a filling kit - depends where you buy and what brand.

3.1 Lt as filled at the factory on this engine Peter. So from the ebay advert of the car, it states 101,000 miles. So theoretically, there's 300 ml left in the tank at 75,000 miles, so you'd be right for a 3 Lt refill kit easily - unless it has been refilled or topped up prior to this.

I've seen them on Ebay consisting of a piece of plastic tube and a few plastic fittings. Is ebay about as cheap as it gets, the cheapest fluid was about 25 pounds per litre (pounds key not working) and quite a bit more for the bits of plastic.

The genuine kit consists of a container of fluid, an empty container, a length of pipe with a fitting with tap on one end (to go on the 3 litres) and a clickfit connector on the other, a hook, a 12" length of pipe, and some string netting. You might - with a bit of luck and a following wind - occasionally be able to source a genuine kit (inc all of the above) for £60 delivered, but they normally go for a bit more. As Marc mentioned earlier - there are third party fluids available as well.

Just a thought, Peter. If you can get just the 3 litres of fluid and you want to borrow my pipes and fittings then I can send them to you. Just return them to me afterwards clean and serviceable. :-D

Going from memory, yours should have been filled originally with 176 fluid. If that's the case, and it's never been refilled, then I think you can use EITHER Infineum OR Powerflex. Marc might be able to confirm.

Although...... "the additive concentrations between EOLYS 176 and the two new additives are identical, there is no impact on the operating calibrations of the engine ECU"*, it is stressed that a 176 additive system should only be filled with Infineum.

No Robin definitely NOT Powerflex! Only Eolys 176 or Infineum F7995 or direct equivalents from Walker or others. Adding Powerflex will bu**er the system up.

I advised Peter already in his other thread when he bought the car. But best to clarify it again.

According to the info I took from DocBackup 5 years ago - they can, but only in certain circumstances.
It's Infineum and Powerflex that can't be mixed.

2. Previous type of additive
Additive DPX 42 is still available and must be used for all servicing on vehicles that have DPX 42.
When stocks of additive EOLYS 176 run out, it will be replaced by the 3rd generation additives.
N.B. : From 15/07/2010 onwards: Additive EOLYS 176 will no longer be available to order from Replacement Parts.

3. Compatibility between additives
Additive DPX42 cannot be mixed with any other additive.
Additive EOLYS 176 can be mixed with additives EOLYS POWERFLEX and INFINEUM F7995.
Additives EOLYS POWERFLEX and INFINEUM F7995 cannot be mixed with each other.
N.B. : As the additive concentrations between EOLYS 176 and the two new additives are identical, there is no impact on the operating calibrations of the engine ECU.
CAUTION : It is not permissible to mix additives INFINEUM F7995 and Rhodia EOLYS POWERFLEX with each other.

4. Filling or topping up with additive
4.1. Identifying the type of additive present in the vehicle
CAUTION : Prior to any operation on the additive reservoir, it is necessary to identify the type of additive present in the vehicle.

That's not what's in the latest document Robin, and seeing that Eolys 176 is already been replaced with Infineum and were the only 2 fluids to be interchangeable, they should not be mixed with Powerflex - it is a totally different additive.

The new 3rd generation particle filter additives
Suppliers and brands:
RHODIA: EOLYS POWERFLEX
INFINEUM: F7995

2. Previous type of additive
Additive DPX 42 is still available and must be used for all servicing on vehicles that have DPX 42.
The EOLYS 176 additive is replaced by the INFINEUM F7995 additive. When current stocks are exhausted, only the new product will be supplied.

3. Compatibility between additives
Additive DPX42 cannot be mixed with any other additive.
Additives EOLYS POWERFLEX and INFINEUM F7995 cannot be mixed with each other.

It's also listed on main sites that again only show the green types of additive as interchangeable (Eolys 176 and Infineum).

At a guess I'd say the change in policy came about because - under the original service instructions - you could legitimately refill a 176 based system with either Infineum OR Powerflex, but when it came to a second refill 100k miles down the line the garage would have no idea what it was previously refilled with and mixing of old Infineum or Powerflex in the tank with the new opposite and incompatible fluid would be a real possibility.
Far easier to change the policy to 'Thou shalt only refill with Infineum' and remove any possibility of incorrect mixing.
I think it remains the case that either Infineum or Powerflex could be used in a 176 system, it's just that it's really REALLY <seriously> not recommended that the owner goes down that route
