I don't 'do' modern cars really and was expecting to spend as much repairing it as my last company car cost (a BMW 120D Sport - hateful thing).
It's been 2 years and 20,000 miles now and I've forked out for an EGR valve (about £150ish I think) when I first got it, then one of the reversing sensors (about a tenner off Ebay and 5 mins to fit) about a year ago.
No leaks, no squeaks, nothing has broken or fell off. Not even had a bulb.
Maybe I've been lucky but the warranty I bought with the car 2 years back has thankfully been a waste of money.

Compared to that awful, unreliable, cramped, uncomfortable BMW this C5 is an absolute dream.

...And another year / 10,000 miles down the line I've still nothing of note to report.
I've serviced it again (genuine parts) and put a couple of tyres and bulbs on it but nothing more.
I sometimes wonder if the ridiculously regular servicing it's received throughout it's life has had some influence?

At the risk of tempting fate once again, I'd go so far as to say it's the most reliable car I've ever ran.

Servicing won’t have anything to do with steering racks and hydraulic struts that are the most failing items. These failures are down to poor design and / or how they are applied to the particular vehicle / exposure to the elements.

I’m on my third rack now, but as this has been replaced with a coated one and also had a boot fitted over the pinion, I eagerly await to see if it outlasts the other 2 new OEM ones!

Glad you are problem free at present.

I fully expect a large puddle of LDS to appear the day after the warranty expires.

Hello All,
I think the idea is a good one,and would like to see it extended to the C5 series 2. Particularly if the distance covered is included.

If you mean for the steering rack, I did that a year or so ago after reading about the issues on here.
The pinion wasn't exactly gleaming but I cleaned it up a covered it in Bilt Hamber anti-rust wax.

I know it will go eventually though, and I'm almost willing it to go before the warranty expires!

Have another go, fill the depression around the pinion with marine grease and it will not fail.

I shall do that.
Is there a particular brand you'd recommend or is one marine grease pretty much the same as another?

Whilst I'm here, I've another problem to report...

Both front track control arm rear bushes are toast. It'd normally be the sort of job I'd enjoy getting stuck into and the parts are as cheap as chips but the warranty company are stumping up for my local garage to do it. I'm not complaining.

Please don’t post specific issues here - this is about component fails in the Poll.

Create another post for specific issues. There are several topics on steering rack issues.

I think if you've already voted (for something else) the button has to be reinstated by a staff member. The button isn't there for me as I've already voted for other items.

Update

Having looked more closely at the permissions, I've made a change that should allow members to change their original votes. So if you need to add something, please do go back in and try it. Obviously, your original choices will remain, but you should be able to tick any additional boxes now.....
