Sorry to hear that - it's another reason why I have my hard disk intact and packed away safely, whilst using the CF card for everyday use. It's more of a preventative measure than anything, but of course can't help the system if there is a hardware failure. They can be re-flashed, but the kit is expensive to buy. Fingers crossed for your new one anyway.

Excellent guide!
Unfortunately, even my hard drive has problems. I tried to clone it with HDD Guru; the copy worked, but there are some sectors that are not repairable and so even with the cloned CF card the NG4 behaves in the same way (the voice commands do not work and there are many other anomalies).
In a message you said that you could insert a blank formatted CF card and proceed to upgrade the firmware (NG4-N42c) with a USB key.
Ok I will try to proceed this way.
The question is: what kind of formatting should be given to the CF card. Is the FAT32 OK, or do I have to proceed in a different way?
Thank you so much for the guide and for the help

Ciao Geo5.

So you have probably already cloned the errors from the Hard Disk. In this case, the best way to proceed is just format the CF card with FAT32. Put the blank CF card back in and user the latest firmware update on the USB drive. It should format and partition the CF card for you with the correct sized partitions and the software.

You will loose you settings of course, but that is expected and it really doesn't take too long to set these up again.

You may find once you have set everything up, that the system may restart a few times and the settings settings will reset again - stick with it and it should settle down.

I strongly recommend that you don't use the Jukebox feature and do not copy music to the CF card using this function - it is better in my opinion to use the SD card slot on the front to copy MP3 folders / albums and files to, and play these from the SD card. It is less for the CF card to handle and should keep the heat down.

I rarely get any resets now - about one or two a year, but I can live with those!

Unfortunately, it seems that the firmware upgrade on the CF card is not working. The process reaches up to 67%, goes off, restarts and then provides this error: "software update error - error code 0x3019 - internal error".
Then it asks me to reinsert the usb key and try to upgrade again.
I repeated the operation three times in a row but I always got the same result.

Ok, let me have a think.....

Can you clarify exactly what you did?

You have extracted the latest firmware onto a USB key, making sure onlybthe extracted folder and files are on the key and nothing else? A screenshot of the file contents might help.

Did you actually remove the CF card and format it in your PC using a card reader as FAT32?

I might be inclined to reformat the CF card (FAT32, as Marc said), and then run Scandisk on it, just to check for any errors with the card. That way you can eliminate a possible cause for the problem.

Let's recap:
1) The problems with my NG4 started about a month ago, when voice recognition started to malfunction; the phone didn't work anymore (neither internal nor via bluetooth), and the navigator worked jerky;
2) as a result of these problems I have attempted to install the firmware upgrade (NG4-N42c) via USB key;
3) installation of the upgrade has never been successful. He always stopped at 67% and then he didn't go further. (To interrupt the process I had to disconnect the battery);
IMG_20190206_070202.jpg
4) I cloned the hard disk on a CF card and in the cloning procedure the HDDGURU software completed the work, but says that there are some sectors with non-repairable errors;
5) so I formatted the CF card in FAT 32, inserted it in the NG4 instead of the hard disk and started the upgrade from the USB key
IMG_20190312_131002.jpg
6) the upgrade process always stops at the same point (67%) with the message: "error code 0x3019, internal error" and still requires the USB key to try again; I repeated this attempt 5 times, always with the same result.
IMG_20190311_200736.jpg
7) I removed the CF card and checked it on the PC. The system has not made any partition and the CF card is the same as when it was inserted.

8) I checked the status of the CF card with the windows 7 scan disc, which tells me that everything is fine

It seams the system cannot write to the CF card. Maybe you need to format it differently, or should you not format it and leave it without any partition?

Several possibilities:

1) It is possible that your N42C firmware upgrade file is corrupt and not written properly, so it cannot read from the USB. Use another copy of the file. I can supply this if you need it - let me know.

2) You have created a fault in the unit by disconnecting the battery - which must NEVER be done when performing a firmware update as it can risk corrupting the unit.

Soo first of all I would get another completely different copy of the firmware update, format the USB key with FAT 32 and then try again. PLease then copy a screen shot of the USB key once you have put the new files on.

This is the screenshot of the copy of the upgrade I used

If you can, send me another copy so I'll try.

Perhaps there would be another way: I could try to clone the CF card with the image of a working hard drive, since mine doesn't work.

Could you send me a copy of the image of your HD?

I'll send you a Private Message shortly Ivano. But looking at that screenshot - it does seem that the disk has some unrecoverable errors, which are affecting the copy.

Ok,
I tried again with the new firmware, but the result is always the same.
At 67% of the upgrade, the system restarts and gives me the usual error message (error code 0x3019, internal error).
I checked to have correctly inserted the CF card with the adapter.
IMG_20190313_085332.jpg
I checked with the dock station that the CF card is readable with the adapter ... OK.
IMG_20190313_085722.jpg
In any case, the system did not partition the CF card. After extracting it from the NG4 I checked it on the PC and it results a single partition (60 GB) formatted in FAT32.
It is as if the system could not write to the CF card.
Last attempt: I could try to clone the CF card with the image of a working hard drive, since mine doesn't work.

Ivano, do you have the link for the CF to IDE card adapter you are using? I want to see the exact adapter you are using if possible - a link to the actual one will be fine....

I have a suspicion that the upgrade is writing some of the files to the internal chips as part of the firmware upgrade, but when it comes to creating and writing to the CF card it cannot communicate or write to the card - which is what you also suspect. I know that some of these adapters will not work / or the configuration of jumpers and pins need to be exactly correct.

As per my guide, the NG4 has the internal DVD set as the MASTER device, so you must have a CF card adapter that is configurable as a SLAVE, otherwise the NG4 will not be able to write to it.

Ok, so are you 100% sure you have the jumper setting correct? What I would do is move the jumper on the CF card to the other position and try again.
