2008 Dispatch mk2 1.6hdi

Post by markking »

Hi all, my name's Mark, and I'm new to the forum. I came across this site whilst Googling a problem with my Van, and somebody hopefully may be able to give me the benefit of their experience.

Here's the story: Driving home from work the other evening a noise started which sounded like a boost leak, I nursed the van home (13 miles) and started pulling it apart to investigate the suspected leak - which I've finally tracked down after investigating the logical suspects (all pipework from turbo to manifold including a pressure test on the intercooler - all ok).

This evening I got my neighbour to rev the engine while I had my head under the bonnet, the noise was coming from the EGR valve area, I could get my fingers to the valve and whilst applying pressure could alter the noise. I got my torch and mirror-on-a-stick out and had a look round the back and could see one of the EGR mounting screws hanging out. I can get my fingertips to it to turn it but it won't go back in. I know there's a steel gasket on this valve and I suspect it's slipped across the hole - at least I'm hoping this is the case and not a snapped bolt! I couldn't pull the bolt out to make sure it's all there as there's pipes etc obstructing it, so I'm going to have to start removing stuff for better access to investigate further.

My question is, has anyone else heard of this happening?

Van history: Purchased new by me, it's now covered 79000 miles and has so far been reliable. I'm aware of the issues with this engine so have been making sure I service it regularly and check the tightness of the injector nuts also. Any input appreciated, thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum Mark. I can't help with your specific problem but I'm sure someone will be able to.

So the EGR itself has worked loose?

I suppose the sound you were hearing was exhaust gas leaking out of the gap that had opened up.

I'm not familiar with that engine so can't help specifically but I, too, hope that the bolt hasn't snapped. If you manage to get the bolt off it might be worth putting a new gasket on and some loctite on the bolts to prevent it working loose again.

Welcome!

Post up the VIN, and I can see which variant is fitted as the valves are quite different.

Yes, my thought exactly. The EGR valve is loose, but after 79000 miles what puzzles me is why? - nobody has ever been round the back of the engine.
I couldn't get a look at the other bolt but I assume it's in at least, albeit maybe not tight.
I'm going to start pulling it apart (again) tomorrow, so will post any updates.

Just seen your post Richard - hi - I'll look up the VIN next time I'm passing the document drawer.

It's fixed - best case scenario - one bolt had worked its way out and the other was loose, the gasket had slipped round which was why I couldn't get the bolt back in but it was fine so I just re-positioned it and tightened the bolts up. It's quiet and smooth now, some of this being down to me having the cracks in the turbo and catalyst heat shields welded up - I've given up buying new ones now as they just don't last, I'm on my 3rd turbo heat shield and that one had cracked again in the same place as the previous two. While it was apart I replaced the pollen, air, and fuel filters, so that's another job I can do without out of the way for another 40000 miles. Assuming it behaves itself over the next few weeks I'll give it an oil change and fit my spare wheel set with the snow tyres on, keeping me mobile even on those heavy days.

Anyway, i'm a happy camper now and feeling the Citroen van-love again - cheers guys.

Hi again all. Van is still good following on from the previous issue but I have another question.

While doing the previous work I noticed that the PAS reservoir to PAS pump pipe has started to show signs of degradation externally. I have some nice sections of 16mm I.D. pre-shaped silicon hose that may be suitable to fix it, so that's my question before I remove the old pipe - is 16mm I.D. the correct size for the hose?

Thanks in advance.
