Re: Car jumping out of 5th gear and now unable to select it

Post by tomthered »

The guy said it was off his car and was ok, but am going to have to trust him to a degree. The worn selector would explain why it kept jumping out and I am assuming that the wear is through loss of oil and I haven't helped when holding it in 5th gear when driving! I will take some tools and whip the cover off to have a look. At least I can see if thats ok on the second hand box. At least he confirmed it had the DP29 engraved on the box. Any idea what size the bolts are?

Seals:

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
0000312146 SEAL 12.16 GBP 14.59 GBP 14.59 GBP (Right)

0000312144 SEAL 12.29 GBP 14.75 GBP 14.75 GBP (Left, original part number)

1608816780 SEAL 13.48 GBP 16.18 GBP 16.18 GBP (Left, replacement part number)

These seals are common though, so you can get them much cheaper than that - have a look on ebay at One stop gearbox shop -a pair is about £10.

Bolts on the end casing are possibly 11mm, plus the 19mm for the level plug.

Many thanks for this. Do you have to remove all 11mm bolts plus the 19mm level plug one to get that cover off?

Yes all of them AFAIK - CitroJim has helpfully provided a pictorial guide: BE3 Stripdown (Yours might not be identical - I think there is a bolt in the fork somewhere).

Thanks for that info Richard, ordered a set that can be delivered by Friday, £10.45. Picking Gearbox up tomorrow night. :-D

EDIT - Got the gearbox and it looks good, selector is in good condition. Also received the oil seals today so just need it putting on now. Apparently it only did 70k :-D

Good stuff, glad to hear you managed to find a low mileage replacement gearset. I realise you probably already know this, but the wear on the selector is due to holding the gear forcibly in place when driving. If you stop using 5th (or ideally stop using the car at all) until the nut is retorqued/replaced then this damage can be avoided and £75 can be saved. At least you've now got a box full of decent used spares should anything else go in future, although these boxes are tough as old boots, I've heard numerous stories of them being run with low oil (or even empty!) for many years, with failure only occurring when one was used for towing in that state so it's unlikely anything else has suffered too much from oil leakage. :)

Just joined the forum to say thanks for the info with regards tightening the nut up on the 5th gear.
Worked a treat and saved me money I can ill afford to lose at this time of year! :)

A bit more information for those who come across this issue in the future:

- there are three plastic clips that you will need to pull out when removing the inner wing lining. They are a pain to get out and take some force. New ones cost about 10p each from Citroen, so I'd advise you to get some in case you break yours.

- on my car the end casing had black multi-purpose sealing compound and it that was a pain to remove. I used an old credit card and lots of elbow grease to remove the compound in order to get a good surface. Make sure you have some liquid gasket ready to reseal!

- the end casing bolts are 11mm. The oil filler nut is 19mm. Dump plug is either 21mm socket or 8mm square plug key.

- the strange looking nut is in fact 28mm bi-hex nut. A standard 12 point 28mm socket will fit it (standard sockets won't), but you want a socket with a wall that isn't more than about 2-3mm, as when the nut goes further down the shaft it screws into a recess with about 3-4mm clearance around it (estimate!). It only goes in the recess by about 5mm. Failing that, I was able to tighten it up sufficiently by using a pair of mole grips on the pinning collar and turning it with those. Make sure you pin/stake the nut after tightening!

- there is very little oil in the 5th gear area if you jack the car up on the same side as the gearbox thus tilting the majority of the oil into the main housing, but some will come out so have a tray under to catch it. I completely changed my gearbox oil as it was dark brown. Remember to have some new transmission oil ready to finish the job! :)

Thanks all!

The crystal ball is fresh out of crystals. Some details might help - what car, what model, what engine, better still a VIN and some more details of the problem....

Yes, that has to be the best head-scratcher for a while now! #-o
Throw some details our way, Patrick, and we'll see what we can come up with.
