Well, it may be a one-way disassembly....

I can cut away at the gaiter at least and see where the oil is coming from, I assume the seals at the top of the ram are what have failed.

I'd be interested to see how they are sealed internally and what is the failing issue - is it the internal components of the ram that fails and allows he oil to leak into and out of the gaiter?

Hi All,
I have been thinking about this, among other things, but what do you think of a Wikki page with a small photo of the problem showing the location of the part and or the tell-tale and 160 charecters or less of the symptoms and a link to an existing conversation/thread to help people check. And by clicking on the poll heading takes you to the wikki page?

I don't want to tempt fate but my X7 has been brilliant.
I don't 'do' modern cars really and was expecting to spend as much repairing it as my last company car cost (a BMW 120D Sport - hateful thing).
It's been 2 years and 20,000 miles now and I've forked out for an EGR valve (about £150ish I think) when I first got it, then one of the reversing sensors (about a tenner off Ebay and 5 mins to fit) about a year ago.
No leaks, no squeaks, nothing has broken or fell off. Not even had a bulb.
Maybe I've been lucky but the warranty I bought with the car 2 years back has thankfully been a waste of money.

Compared to that awful, unreliable, cramped, uncomfortable BMW this C5 is an absolute dream.

Well, 14 racks from the regular members here so far! That has to be the majority of X7 owners, closely followed by the front struts. This has been quite useful in building up a pattern.

hi Marc, the submit button is missing, but if you can throw me in for a rack I would appreciate that sometime (well, I don't really! :))

Also, mine has had handbrake performance issues in the past (including a locked actuator in the caliper) but as yet I have got through MOTs just..

so technically I haven't replaced the cable/motor - yet

There definetally should be an automatic transmission valve body (Aisin AM6) in the list...

Mike 'Filburt' one cause that's frequently not considered with outside edge tyre wear is the regularity of full lock turns i.e. do you stop outside your house then do a right about U turn every day to go back the way you came, this puts a lot of thrust on the outside edge of the nearside front tyre and rasps off the rubber quicker than you think.

I can now add my heater control panel to that list. I can't adjust the temperature on the drivers side any more. Passengers side works but the rotary knob on the drivers side feels different and no longer works.

Bloody car! Once this has been replaced, this car has cost more on maintenance then purchase in 2.5 years.

The driver's side heater knob on mine has started going intermittent as well. Can they be stripped and the electrics cleaned or is it just a case of replacing the whole unit ?
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

There aren't any diagrams for the internals Robin - it's another replacement module - however it will be worth attempting a DIY clean with some electrical contact cleaner. We have a problem with the temperature / timer 'jog dial' on our oven - you either get a small increment or it goes mad and jumps hours making fine tuning an art. I used some electrical cleaner a few years back and it improved it for a few weeks, but has not gone back to the same behaviour.

I suspect that it is just worn down and ultimately will need replacing. Note that being the driver's side it gets more use on a RHD so is likely to be the knob that goes first as it were.

£581.42 thereabouts, depending on trim colour new if the Bizone control unit - gulp!

Snapped alternator belt at 130k. Hadn't been replaced. Not sure when it should have been replaced but glad I had road service assistance. 10 min job and £20.

Mine did this 5 months ago or so, luckily the Elctro Power Steering system runs direct from the battery, so I had enough juice to drive 20 miles home and then to the garage to get it replaced. I gave the battery a well-deserved charge after that.

I did have my suspicions that the belt was levered off with a screwdriver after the A/C compressor was replaced at the main dealers - as I noticed that one day there was a little 'nick' in the edge of the belt. That no doubt is where is eventually tore across and ripped off.
