Re: Computer operating systems
I downloaded a copy but wasn't too keen on it. I did an ota Nougat 7.1 on my WileyFox Swift which is my daily phone and it pretty well turned it into a brick. Absolutely dreadful. I found a copy of Cyanogen mod 13.1 and reinstalled that and the phone is like new again. WileyFox weren't too impressed when I told them stating I should always use the latest update and I could void my warranty. Twaddle! My phone is running great why change?

Re: Computer operating systems
I just flashed XenonHD to my Nexus 7 as the vanilla system was pretty dire.

Re: Computer operating systems
My son was going away last weekend and on his way out mentioned that his laptop was sick - Windows stopping him doing anything while it downloaded and installed updates and then the updates failing then starting the nonsense all over again but he had tried that morning and all he got were lines on the screen and rebooting did nothing.
Picked it up a couple of hours later and water (I hope) poured out of it
Took it to bits and mopped the worst of the water up and left it to dry for a few days.
Reassembled and it is completely dead. The power button did light up then blinked for a bit at first but now does nothing at all
Off to buy a replacement shortly, an upgrade to cope with his Go-Pro as the Lenovo, a bit on the basic side, was struggling with it.

£160 for a Lenovo Thinkpad business laptop, not too bad.

That's very reasonable Steve
Now bin the Windows rubbish on it and pop Linux Mint onto it

Re: Computer operating systems
He has tried for two hours to connect to the net and given up.
He had the wrong security option and also typed the passcode in with the capslock on.
Quick fix but bow BT is blocking it insisting on downloading some crap but the connection times out before it responds.
Bloody Windows s**t.

Re: Computer operating systems
Fixed!
BT were no help at all but it was a setting in the router (HomeHub) that needed changing - they have a "Smart Setup" option that only shows its face with Windows and needs some crap downloading - which failed - and logging in to "My BT" - which has also never worked as it spits out the passwords.
Killed the setup gizmo and all OK. Took some finding though.
Linux is oblivious to it

Re: Computer operating systems
Pleased it's fixed Seve but what a bloody parlarva
And you wonder why I hate IT with a passion... What you have said is just one more illustration
IT is seriously making me ill...
I'm so pleased Linux does just what it says, easily, simply and with no stress.
I think if I was forced to use Windows I'd lo longer be online at all... Windows causes me untold stress...
I wonder how many others it makes ill? I'd love to know...

Agree completely Jim. They seem to build in a lot of completely unnecessary complications.

Re: Computer operating systems
Don't they just
I can see a time, unless Linux Mint stays roughly as it is, when I may well end up largely going offline for good...
I really hope a simple, no frills OS that just does the job will always remain pretty much available for the likes of me...

Re: Computer operating systems
I'm sure there will be at least one Linux variant that will be eminently suitable Jim. Perhaps Debian itself, unMinted.
