Car jumping out of 5th gear and now unable to select it

Post by tomthered »

:( :( :(

I have a 2006 Xsara Picasso 1.6HDI model. This past week it has been jumping out of 5th gear, but all the other gears work fine. It tends to be when acceleration is on the engine when it jumps out of gear. Holding the gear stick held it it. However, this morning I cannot now get 5th gear. Does anyone have any idea what this is please?

I have searched the forum and read that there is a nut holding the gear on that could have loosened or it could be a mount that’s worn and I can say that you can feel the engine tilt when acceleration is pressed but not sure if this is normal.

Any thoughts welcome

Others will help with the problem......but I do not think I would be driving it at all. The problem is getting worse and will keep doing that until it fails.....then it always cost a lot more $$$'s to fix
Time to stop until its fixed.

I can't remember which car or gearbox but I remember having to fix a lost fifth gear which was in fact the nut come off and let it slide out of mesh, I recall it was an easy fix, done in situ.

Quite a common issue, but not mega simple to fix. It will almost certainly be the nut loose on the end of the fith gear , remove the gearbox end casing (4 or 5 bolts, and all will be revealed, the nut is often a strange multihex design, and you will have to find just the right socket to fit this. The peening will likely of failed. If you leave it go for ages, the end casing will get worn away.

Need to see if I can get someone to look at it first. Have seen second hand boxes for £80 - £110 so not very expensive if I get it swapped. Seems people are reluctant to entertain looking at it, I assume it takes a while but its not a job I can do.

Manchester must have many "Gearbox Specialists"....most garages use them these days anyway for gearbox overalls due to the need for specialist tooling.

Right guys could someone help point me in the right direction please? How do I tell if the Gearbox is for my 90bhp model or the 100bhp. Is there a number to look for and where is it located? I have seen one with 20DM62 on it, which I assume is the model reference, but unsure if its suitable and how to find out.

Are the gearboxes the same on different models, i.e. Picasso C4 as opposed to my Xsara Picasso MPV type. Would ones off a Peugeot be the same?

The VIN number is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] if someone could look on Service Citroen for me please?

As ever your help is much appreciated. :) :)

Thanks for that info, is there any chance you could check what the number should be like "20DM62?"

Based on a quick search of service.citroen and peugeot service box, your box (2222 QS) was also used on:

BERLINGO VP (M59) (and PARTNER VP (M59)) TURBO DIESEL DW10TD AND BE4-5L MANUAL GEARBOX AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 19 X 72 SINCE GEARBOX 6877312 EXCEPT FAM MOTORING ( MOTOR REINFORCE )

I suspect that it is not the same as a 20DM62 based on the listing at http://bartebben.com/parts/citroen/xsar ... dmf2-.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The 20DM62 seems to be used on 2004 vehicles, but I don't know how they differ.

It's surely got to be easier to get someone to drop the end cover off, and check the nut - an hour's labour on the lift tops????

I had a similar problem on a CX many years ago, although it was mainly complete loss of synchro that was the problem, I don't know how similar the box is to yours but I was able to access and repair it by removing the end plate, in my case the snchro ring had completely failed.

I had this happen on an S-plate Xsara 1.9TD. Unscrewed the end plate and it was obvious what had happened. Something had broken. I removed all loose bits and put it on ebay. A Portuguese chap bought it to tow a boat back to Portugal with. He made it too!

Richard I am in the hands of the experts. How long would it take to drop the end of the gearbox and what is involved? I have seen gearboxes advertised with DP29 on them, I assume they are the same. I have a heart problem so am unable to do anything strenuous. I have a feeling people are more interested in the easier option. If it involves dropping the box then its an easier option and also could it happen again?

@Xantia_V6 the reason I mentioned the DM62 was as an example, now that I see it should be DP29 that will help in my quest. However, there is a guy local to me who may be able to do that. He charges £30 per hour so I will ask the question about him dropping the box to remove the cover and see if he will do that. Will it need draining of oil first?

Can I also add my thanks for all your responses, so helpful and pointing me in the right direction, just wish I could do it myself, but if the box needs dropping to have a look then not something I could do. In terms of looking for the reference DP29, where would that be on the box? Its raining here so that stops me getting under the car to have a look.

@Stickyfinger your info as usual is superb. At least I can see what it looks like.
