I wonder if anyone can shed any light on an issue I have been having with my mk1 C5 2.0 HDI 110.
She is seriously down on power recently. Has happened relatively suddenly, from normal to very sluggish over a period of a month or two.
It started happening only under full throttle/steep hill conditions when it felt like the turbo was pulsing between 70%-100% boost, but under light-mid throttle was absolutely fine. However more recently it is as flat as a pancake, feels like no turbo at all below 2K rpm, above which it seems to pick up a bit but hills are a nightmare.
Fuel filter and air filter are both new within the past few months, has always been serviced recent oil/plugs etc. I have checked all the boost hoses and cannot see any splits or leaks, I cannot hear any boost leaking from anywhere with my head under the bonnet.
Does anyone have any other ideas, I have been thinking possibly MAF, but would it give these symptoms? Any clues gratefully received? Cheers Sam

Re: Citroen C5 Low power/surging
Sounds like it could be the MAF to me - do you know anyone with a car with a similar engine you could borrow one off to test? Otherwise, Lexia will show the air flow.

Re: Citroen C5 Low power/surging
As said, sounds like the Airflow meter, try disconnecting it, this will usually give a marked improvement, then you can go buy a new one .

Re: Citroen C5 Low power/surging
Thanks for replies. Unfortunately I don't have a lexia, I have contemplated getting one a few times but the car has always behaved itself until now.
Lighty, is the idea that if disconnecting the MAF improves performance then MAF is at fault?
As far as I know the MAF is the original and the car is on 100k miles now so it hasn't done too badly.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to make/brand/retailer to get a new MAF from. There seems to be a massive disparity in prices from cheapo ebay jobbies for £30 to over £100 for a genuine Cit.
Cheers Sam

Re: Citroen C5 Low power/surging
I had a similar problem with my 406 2.0. Hdi and it turned out to be the MAF. I bought a secondhand genuine one off ebay for very little money and it works fine.
I have found with my C5 that practically every other problem is due to a faulty pressure regulator on the pump.

Re: Citroen C5 Low power/surging
I replaced the MAF with a genuine VDO part from Carparts4less - £72 inc p&p. Pleased to report all sorted.
The car has not driven so nicely in a long time, it must have gradually deteriorated over time.
Thanks to all those who advised, glad I can keep the car a bit longer.
Cheers Sam

Re: Citroen C5 Low power/surging
according to my lexia, a recent / ongoing pollution fault and limp mode are pointing at the MAF.,.,

Re: Citroen C5 Low power/surging
No, there was no limp mode or engine light, just lack of torque when accelerating.

Re: Citroen C5 Low power/surging
Our 2012 3.0HDI C5 sometimes gives a surge, just before reaching normal operating temperature (usually under gentle acceleration). Normally only happens about once a day and I am not sure if it is engine related, or the transmission hunting between gears (often occurs in 4th gear). Never happens at normal operating temperature or when motor is very cold. Have had a couple of dealer mechanics look at it, one suggested it might be faulty throttle body sensor (based on fault code) but wasn’t sure. Anyone experienced anything similar?
