Where's the doodah that lowers the wotsit for the thing?
On the estate, there doesn't not appear to be anywhere that lowers the spare wheel carriage, at least in the same way that is on the hatch.
Here's what's there on the hatch:

And here's what there is on the estate:

Or is it the case on the estate that lowering via this turnwheel will lower the wheel? On the estate, this seems to lower the carriage and then you turn the other doodah to get the wheel and tyre down proper. (confused)
BTW, I could really do with a spare wheel and brace/etc for the new car/old car as and when anyone could supply one, please.

The slotted bolt near the tailgate releases and lowers the spare wheel carrier.
The front bolt on your car is an aftermarket security device to stop anyone nicking the spare from the car.
The security kits were available from Citroen dealers but the fitting often left a lot to be desired.

Cheers, that explains it (obviously).
btw no.2, the back of the car on the estate was/is sopping wet from all the rain, and I'm beginning to wonder if the smell was all dog-related after all.

This guide will help you with the tailgate Tim. It's a very common problem.

Cheers, Jim, that looks uber useful.
We've got MOT on Friday, then a bit of road tax and we'll finally get on the road.

Re: Where's the doodah that lowers the wotsit for the thing?
Hi there,
My Xantia was getting a wet boot because the seal around the rear wiper spindle was letting water in (tailgate membrane needed sealing as well though) might be worth a look in that area?
Regards.

Hi Jim
About this estate leaking at the boot.
When you say about putting this mastic on, do you mean rip out the old thick rubber seal and put the mastic in its place? I ask this because the seal is big and thick/spongy - nothing like the mastic, is it?
Thanks

Re: Where's the doodah that lowers the wotsit for the thing?
It sounds like you're refering to the tailgate to body seal (usually a foam rubber extrusion that clips to a body seam) whereas Jim's refering to the plastic membrane behind the tailgate 'door' card that seals off the tailgate cavity.
Steve.

So, looking at this photo of the rubber seal, pulled away from the metal of the car, where do you attach this new wonder seal from the 'W' company? I guess on the outside edge of the metal? The company do different sizes, as well - I am wondering which one to buy, Jim.

Re: Where's the doodah that lowers the wotsit for the thing?
Hi again Tim,
Its not the tailgate seal, its a seal/membrane behind the "card" of the tailgate itself.
You'll need to remove that first and then you should be able to see the membrane behind it.
Water leaks into the tailgate, usually by the wiper and this membrane then acts as a barrier and stops the water getting into the car, and diverts it to a drain hole over the back bumper (I believe )
Basically remove the membrane, clean both sides and then reattach using the mastic tape. Bought all the stuff to do mine, but then the car failed the MOT badly so did not bother.
See below for a couple of pictures of the membrane, and also the tailgate with the card removed. (You can actually still see some of the mastic on the tailgate, to give you an idea where its situated)
Hope this helps.
Good Luck
Cheers

Oh, I see. So that first photo shows the back of the card, I presume, with nasty rotten mastic?
Thanks Dave, I get it now.

It was more like Blu Tak, which says a lot about the previous owner of the car.Napoleon wrote:Oh, I see. So that first photo shows the back of the card, I presume, with nasty rotten mastic?
