citroen relay van knocking noise

Post by selectsands »

i have noticed that when i am pulling away from stopped and am turning either left or right there is a rapid knocking noise, this noise stops if i depress the clutch. it also stops if i am travelling in a straight line, i have not noticed it at speed about 10 or 15 mph or more.....however not sure if this is related but when travelling at speed when i turn, more so when i turn left but there is a high pitch noise that is only in certain areas of turning, for instance i turn a corner and it skweaks but if i turn the wheel another bit it stops and then turn a bit more and it may come back!!!!! please help as i use this for work and need it run smoothly.. thanks ant

Inner CV Joint on its way out or driveshaft wear on the splines would be my guess.

When you depress the clutch the drive is diconnected from the transmission and likely any "slap" between the joint at the shaft under load will diminish.

How many miles has the van done?

165450 and i just noticed on the last mot it has an advisory - possible suspension strut bearings, steering system tight....could this have anything to do with it or should i add it to the list of things that need attention !!!

The strut top bearings do rust up & break up but this normally shows as a clanging / twanging noise when turning the steering....imagine the noise the coil spring jumping round in notchy movements as you turn the wheels would make.

may i just ask if it could be the struts and would the noise stop if i were to take the take the load of them by free wheeling (depressing the clutch) or do you guys think it would be likely to be the struts as well as something else, like the cv joint or drive shaft (as vince wrote)....can i perform a test to single one of them out. sorry to ask so many questions but i don't know much about mechanics.....don't suppose you may know how much any of these jobs may cost to repair....if they are not too complicated could i buy and replace myself???
really appreciate your help

Free wheeling won't affect the load on the strut top bearings.

To test the strut top bearing get someone to turn the steering from lock to lock while you hold your hand on the coil spring , see if you can feel the spring sort of jumping around as the steering is turned. Compare the suspect side with the side that seems ok to see if there is any difference.
The spring should move around smoothly.

As Vince has mentioned the knocking noise sounds like a CV joint...can you not have a local garage have a drive of the van to try to give a diagnosis... as knocking noises can be hard to pin down without hearing them.

This is a strut top bearing I replaced on my ZX....it had just started to make a twanging noise when the steering was turned....it fell to bits as I was removing it...

thank you for info on strut i will check it out, i popped in on a garage near mine and they have confirmed that the knocking is the cv joint and they have said they will do both sides for £120, hopefully this is a good deal and solves the noise!
thanks for help and hope you all have a great weekend

I would think that was a fair enough price for 2 CV joints fitted.

Let us know how you get on.
