Citroen BX: Fixing slow starter motor

With the miles many BX's have now travelled, particularly those in City areas may find that the starter motor is tending to become slow & at times particularly in cold weather may not always want to spin the engine fast enough for it to start. If this slow turning is accompanied by a grinding sound, there is a better than average chance that the problem is the carbon brushes in the starter motor. FIX> Remove starter motor from car & remove carbon brushes for inspection. Clean area around where they are fitted with Methylated spirits on a cotton bud & blow out with compressed air. Relace brushes if showing signs of wear or shorting. If when attempting to start the car no click is heard coming from the starter solenoid & the dash warning lights do not dim when the key is turned to the start position, check the starter relay. This is a small square box which should be screwed to the inner guard near the battery (BX 16V) on the firewall or in some models under the dash. It can be traced by following the wire from the starter soleniod. Prise off top with a screw driver & check contacts for corrosion. Clean if necessary & push together with fingers (car in Neutral, handbrake on.) If starter then turns, replace relay at your first opportunity.
