Six new Panasonic cells (3400mAh) now fitted, and working ok.
Accepted charge up to 99%, and showing 4h+ available working time off battery.
All a very snug fit in the slot-in battery case!

The order to <everpowerindustry.com> for the six cells turned out to be a duff expedition: they took payment, but obviously had no stock, and two requests for a delivery date produced waffle. Unexpectedly, a full PayPal credit materialised without my asking for it. Make of that what you may.

Meantime, Amazon.es supplied the goods within 10 days, despatched from Germany:

And they didn't explode on being soldered. Bonus!

Yes, a real bonus! :?
Panasonic's attached cautions included the instruction not to operate at a temp in excess of 212F (i.e.100C), so rapid soldering of the outer casing likely to allow localised heat to be shunted away by the casing.
Used a glass brush to clean the metal case, and some decent RS solder. The solder 'took' in about 3 secs.

You've still got better nerves than I in such a situation.

It's not as bad as it seems Paul. A hot iron and quick application to the centre of the cap only (so the solder blobs) works very well.
AFAIK, the cells won't explode but overheating will kill them stone dead.

But if you're still not convinced and have a need to make your own cell packs, maybe rig something like this?

What a good video, and plenty of electrical and materials detail.
I think the addition of the timer would be a good idea, especially if using a larger current source.
Thanks for posting it Mike.
