Grand Scenic - Auto Gearbox - Sealed For Life?

Post by LMusgrove »

Hi,
I am new to the forum.
We have a 2009 Grand Scenic 2.0 DCi auto. I asked our local Renault specialist to change the gearbox oil as the car has done 105,000 and while it drives very well, this is our first auto and I am used to servicing cars fairly regularly.
He said that Renault had told him that the box is "sealed for life" and advised him not to touch it. He also said that there isn't a drain plug fitted so he couldn't change it anyway.
So, what does sealed for life mean? - I am old enough to remember 100,000 miles being a fairly long life for a car and we've had enough Renaults to expect the unexpected!!
I have seen a couple of posts on this and other forums but I can't find much info about the gearbox (I believe it is a Jatco JF613E) regarding the expected lifespan or servicing.

Would anyone on this "friendly place" have experience or have known anyone with this gearbox and could let me know whether I should worry and try to find someone who could change the gearbox oil or just carry on.

Thanks.

The gearbox on my C5 is also "sealed for life" but it is possible and desirable to change the oil. Dealers never want to give too much info away anyway because they want your custom (at their inflated prices).
I see you're in Wolverhampton just a few miles from me. I know there is an independant Renault man at the top of Charles Street in the Great Bridge - Greets Green area. Streetview might show who he is, I'm not recommending him because I've not used him. Also in Wolverhampton there is a garage who specialize in French cars, I used them once for a service on my XM, they were good but I can't remember the name! #-o I know it was not far from Bushbury and I think it had the word "Lion" in the name, I'll see what I can find out.

I've done a search for your gearbox on t'interweb and it's also fitted to some Nissan models and other Renault's. I found a few forums where users have done partial drains and refills which is standard practice on an auto because you can't completely drain the box without an awful lot of work. And there IS a drain plug so don't believe everything your honest Reno dealer tells you.

HI any auto gearbox manufacturer will tell you to change the fluid at 30,000 miles reason being debris from the drive clutches and the metal spacer plates gets into the fluid this will accumalate over time and and build up in the valve body /EMV valves and fluid ways and the internal strainer causing problems , in a moden transmission there are sensors one of them is whats called a condition sensor the computer reads the temp if the temp is high it reads it as to thin so throws limp mode .

The AL4 /DPO was touted by Renault as sealed for life they say never change the fluid just top up when nessesary that mans you have to take it to the Renault dealer unless you have the skill sets and can read working temp and know just how to do it , take a look at the forums and see just how many renaults have problems with their gear box ,
Look in a Renault handbook and you will see = to long on the motorway = limp mode , to long in traffic = limp mode , carring to much weight = limp mode . these are all signs of over heating , poor fluid or condition ,poor cooling .

I bought a Modus without doing the research first it was getting hard on the gearshift and sometimes stayed to long in gear iv done a few auto boxes in my time so did the numbers i found a fluid that was the third of the price of Renaults special fluid i decided to flush my gearbox out ,not as simple as it sounds , put the new fluid in checked the level [at working temp ]

That was over 2 years ago it drives as it should and i sometines pull a trailer with it in summer never had any problems ,
You can see a few Renaults in Gumtree with gearbox problems going cheap , the gearbox has a bad name because of this , quite why people think the fluid lasts for ever is beyond me , would they drive 100,000 on the same engine oil and never change the filter ?
