They sell because they work and are superbly made. Those who aren't car nuts, which, let's face it, is probably 99% of the driving population love stuff like that.

I have a pair of "forceps" with teeth in the jaws to grip the filter, but the filter was solid and the teeth ended up just chewing the filter.
In the end, I managed to tap it round with a bit of flat bar that was kicking around. Fortunately, thanks to the positioning of the filter, the oil from the filter had drained into the sump, so no spillages
