Jatco (Aisin) 6speed Auto "Trough the level plug" ATF renewal. The Easiest DIY method!?

Post by Axa »

After finding this eminent Russian guide, I took on the job to change ~50% of the ATF since our 2008 Espace IV is now close to 200.000km.

https://www.drive2.ru/l/2343193/

Since the fill plug is hard to get access to in the tight Espace engine compartment, I choose the alternative way to do it.
Filling trough the drain plug is nothing new. But so far I have not seen anyone doing it this way.
The level plug/pipe happens to be 6mm in outside diameter. I had a length of left over fuel hose that did fit right on with a tight fit needing no clamping.
The other end of the thick hose did fit equally well into the plastic pipe on the valve on the end of the cheap fluid transfer pump.
How much ATF that will pour back out when removing the plug is up to how fast you are. I suggest filling 0,2L more then what was drained out to be sure to not underfill.

This did work really well on our Jatco AJ0-002 ( Jatco JF613E )

I guess it can also also work on the AISIN AWTF-80 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AWTF-80_SC BUT thego a plastic level plug, So i would be very gentle as i suspect it could easily break if the hose is pulled sideways. Help of an third hand to hold the hose in position and for screwing the plug back out with the hose stil on, might be a good idea.

Hers some pictures and intruction on how to do the traditional from above fill.

To get as much as 4liters out I had to drain troug both the plug and also by loosening the lower half of the valve cover screws.
I did pry the cover out a few mm. (As shown in photo below..) Make sure to do it with a dull object to not harm the gasket!!! A dull kitchenknife or similar.. Just dont use something wood or plastic as it might break!

It did leak a bit between the bottle and the transfer pump.So don't forget rubber gloves and a few rags.
Having a friend doing the pumping can be good. But it's not to bad if you take your time.

Next time I will cut the pipe of the bottles and stick the green hose inside since I suspect that will make pumping easier.
It took long time to get the air to move around the way I did it due to vacuum in the bottle.

6mm fuel hose pressed on to the level pipe screwed in backwards (sticking out)
No leak at all. But make sure it fits tight and have a friend to hold on to it if in doubt!

Excellent, there is always a way! I used to fill my older Aisin 5 speed from above with funnel and tube.
