Scenic Headlight Problem

Post by RobinMasters »

I've got a 2003 Renault Scenic 2.

The near side dipped beam stopped working. I changed the (blown) bulb, still nothing. 'Surely there can't be separate fuses for each headlight?', I thought. I checked anyway, and discovered that there are indeed two fuses. Both fine. Changed the one on the non-working side, just in case, still no light.

Please tell me there's a common and easy to rectify fault causes this. I haven't got the patience for electrical fault finding!

Did you try a sharp whack with the palm of your hand on the side of the lens unit?

That worked on ours.

Dip and/or main beam likely to be switched by a relay. Check the connections at this.
If the other headlight is working ok, then check the wiring that links the two headlights together.
Check also the connectors at the headlight units themselves.

Just a thought, the new bulb isn't a duff one is it? not unknown for this to happen even with "quality" branded ones.

I had this problem with a 406 and couldn't find it, so I fitted a relay switched by the good lamps feed.

Had the same, Peter, on a friend's Pug306 - one headlight with no supply on dip.
Ended up simply running a new cable across from the working unit.

XM now has relays on both dip (OE) and main (added), to take the main beam load off the light switch, and reduce length of the cable run.

The Scenic I sold recently came back today with this issue too, I was logging on to post about it and saw this at the top of the forum.
N/s dipped bulb has blown (filament has melted not broken?) put new bulb in and nothing, tried another new bulb, nothing. both lamps are fused separately in the under bonnet fuse box and they are ok, its not that there is poor voltage there is nothing at all to the plug voltage wise but a good earth is present, no amount of wiggling connections is producing any results.
Investigation continues.........................

XM Prestige PRV6 92
Talbot Express Autotrail Chinook 89
Mitsubishi L200 Trojan 14
Xantia Activa 95, sold (missed)

Service Citroen is awesome, it shows me pictures of all the parts i used to be able to buy............

Hi Dean

The same happened with the 406, the bulb went and from then on no power. I ran a thin lead across to the other light and picked up a heavier supply from the fusebox to feed the relay, took a great deal less time than trying to find the fault and didn't increase the load on the wiring.
