Clio Auto Service

Post by citroenxm »

Hello Renault people

Ive been asked to do a service on a 2000 Y reg clio Auto..

I dont actually know the milage yet, but whats the story with auto box's on these? Are they a drain and re fil unit, or sealed for life box?

Cheers for now
Paul

Sealed for life Paul, it's the same gearbox as my mum's Scénic.

What make are they out of interest??

Are they pretty long lasting? Or suffer like most ZF units??

It's a DPO Box - one of the best auto gearboxes ever fitted to a Renault!

I've heard of very few problems with them, they seem very reliable indeed in comparison to the ZF.

Just checked both the service book and handbook to make absolutely sure and yes, it's sealed for life and requires no attention - there is no mention of it in the servicing program.

I hear many 'sealed for life' auto boxes do benefit from oil changes ...

Our VW had a sealed for life auto box, the dealer failed to change the oil on the service even after we asked for it to be done. We took it back for them to do.

Still didnt make the gearbox avoid a £2K repair mind!

If its got a drain plug I would be changing it.

Must be a 1.6 Clio with an atuo box?

There isn't a drain plug. Well at least there isn't on our Scénic with the same 'box.

The Vel Satis is the same, a sealed for life unit. Heard of very few problems with those too. I think it's better that it's designed like that than requiring regular changes which end up being overlooked by careless owners. This has killed off many nice Renaults over the years!

The gearbox probably being the reason it's still around!

Yes, same colour as my imminent V6! There's a decent car underneath the stick on pound land exhaust pipes and hideous alloy wheels :)

The AL4 is refillable my Citroen C3 has been done many times. It does do strange gear shifts at times and confuses itself but the oil is able to be changed.

OK the short one is well its not short , I have downloaded 3 differnt PDF files on these all for PSA vehicles unless you know what your doing best to someone who knows what they are doing its not sealed for life at all there is a pan on the front of the unit that comes off , and it has a drain come level plug = it has an insert up inside the drain hole that acts as a level plug when the fluid is changed but you have to know what your doing because if you dont you will either under fill or over fill it causing damage either way , i drive anModus with the same unit i flushed mine out but did not use Renaults recomended fluid because it can cause overheating problems , the hand book says little if anything at all about this unit except if you spend to long on the moptorway you could get limp mode / to long in traffic =limp mode / pulling to much weight = limp mode ,
All of these are syptoms of over heating this unit has a temp/vicosity sensor that trips limp mode if the fluid get to hot = to thin , me i did mine 2 years ago it just started to thump on the change i did my research and found a fluid that cost £19 for 5ltrs not the £60+ renault wanted it drives as new and never over heats 80/90 on the motor way all day ,puling my trailer with a load no problem stuck in traffic no problem at all ,

This unit has a bad reputation but thats bought about by Renaults lack of service provision for this unit ,ask any auto tans MFG and they will tell you to change the fluid at or before 30,000 miles because debris from the clutches and the steel spacers will clog the valves and the valve body my fluid is cleaner than a cats RS and will be flushed out again approching anothe 30,000 miles !
