Xantia 2001 - Radio replacement/ steering wheel buttons

Post by Pshemsky »

Hi Guys.

Just a quick question regarding original radio for Xantia. I bought car without radio and had a hope that I'll be able to fit original radio from my previous (two years older) Xantia. Unfortunately looks like top socket/plug is different and power is located on different pins on plug (radio reset itself every time when ignition if off). So my questions are:
1. What was original radio model for 2001 Xantia - VIN VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] ?
2. Is there any adaptor which would make possible to use older (from V reg - 1999) radio just like original (later models) ?
3. Can I buy any other second hand radio which would work without any modification to wiring ?
4. If there is any good and cheap replacement, would steering wheel buttons work with it without any modifications/adaptors ?

Any ideas, recommendations or maybe someone got original for sale ?
Many Thanks.
Prem

I had one like this on my -00 Xantia HDi:
Image

Replacing with aftermarket -player was easy, and even dash looked fine when closing the lid. I had incartec's or similar adapter-wiring kit and steering wheel buttons worked fine with Kenwood DSP-CD-player.

The original unit on the Xantia from your VIn as a "RB1" RDS CASSETTE AUDIO SYSTEM

The part number is: 656439.

There is a brand new one on a listing here:

https://www.ebay.ie/itm/331856686308

Photo is a bit naf, but is a different unit to Marko's ^
Xantia Radio.PNG
You can get a CD Changer for it if required, but this is the genuine unit as shipped from factory.

If radio dies completely (ie loses all its stored stations, etc) every time the IGN is turned off, the unit could be lacking the +12v permanent battery live, and is just running on the +12v IGN supply.

Thanks for photos and information guys.
Looks like item been sold long time ago. Went through few different ayction pages and couldn't find anything like this. Looks like I'll have to find a different replacement and get some kind adapter. What other specifications should I look for apart from being 1 din radio ?

Yes Chris, and I even know how to modify plug to get it sorted, but steering wheel buttons won't work anyway. So I'm trying to get original radio or replacement (with proper adaptor) which will be fully functional and operateable from steering wheel :/

So the auction which Marc point me to (for brand new item) ended long time ago. But from description I can see that radio been fitted to Saxo, Berlingo and Xsara too. I found auction which I think could be a right one:
https://www.ebay.ie/itm/2002-CITROEN-BE ... 3149018663

Is there any other information (from manufacturer label) which I could check to identify if its a right radio - I'm guessing that I wont find original citroen part number on it but maybe something else ?
Thanks for any help.

That looks to be the correct one. However - a couple of things - that unit was installed in a Berlingo - so may of been VIN coded - however on your Xantia, it won't have a BSI - so on those models they used a 4 digit radio code.

So unless you obtain the 4 digit code from the seller (if he even has it) you may be no better off.

I can't locate any more of those Cassette units, (and apologies for the link to the sold item). I know that the Xantia build number for the VIN you specified was 08808. They changed the unit from build number 08421 and again, but the latest unit for that Xantia is the one I referred to in my earlier post.

I think you may have to bite the bullet and get an aftermarket one instead unless you can source one from a breaker.

Prem,
Have a look over on Club-XM at the Self-Help I've just done, on fitting a modern radio to an old car, and retaining the steering wheel controls.
http://www.club-xm.co.uk/forum/viewtopi ... 83#p112280
Might give you a few ideas. You might also find an interface kit that works, if going for a brand new unit; I didn't manage that on the XM.
Easy enough to measure the values of the car's resistance chain, at the connection to the existing radio.

Looks beautiful Chris and definitely will go for something like this in with my XM (when I get it back). It's still too complicated job for me but it's good to keep these materials for proper car electrician which will know what to do with it. Many thanks for tip

And I think You're right.
I've looked on 'incartec' page (as Marko mentioned above) to check out on adopters but looks like first I need to get a radio. The perfect one should have cassette player and front AUX (but I can accept if will have at least one of them). Got few on eBay and would like to ask for your opinion:
1. JVC - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jvc-Ks-Fx240 ... 2531600578
2. Alpine - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alpine-TDM-7 ... 4152554932
3. Kenwood - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kenwood-KRC- ... rk:30:pf:0
4. Sony - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sony-Xr-L210 ... 2924309902
5. Aiwa - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Old-Boxed-Ai ... 3339778258
6. JVC (new) - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JVC-KD-R421- ... 4098905718

I would appreciate if someone who may have a knowledge about stereo could help me to choose or maybe point to something different.
Many thanks Guys !

And maybe photo of my current radio and frames which I have :

A couple of things:
Is the cassette function essential? This will limit choice these days.

If it was me, I would be looking at it the other way round and find a Xantia compatible system first. For example, here's a complete Pioneer kit for the Xantia:

They can also supply the harness for the steering wheel controls on request, but their kit includes aerial and wiring adapter, plus it supports Bluetooth (phone and streaming), plus it is a DAB radio and includes an aerial. Not bad for the price considering a simple Yatour box alone will set you back £80 ish.

Listed Features:
  • Pioneer Bluetooth / Audio Streaming
  • Voice Recognition
  • 2 Phones Full Time Connection
  • FREE DAB AERIAL
  • Microphone Included
  • Brightness Control - 10 steps
  • Radio Data System (RDS)
  • Steering Wheel Compatible - *Additional adaptor required*
  • Best Stations Memory (BSM)
  • Traffic Announcement
  • DAB/DAB+
  • Auto Tuning
  • ABC Search
  • 13-Band Graphic Equaliser
  • Front USB in Port
  • High Pass Filter
  • Works with iPod / iPhone
  • Low Pass Filter
  • MP3, WMA, WAV, FLAC and AAC audio files
  • Direct Sub Drive
  • Source Level Adjuster
  • Front AUX in Port
  • RCA Pre-Outs - 3 (Front, Rear, Subwoofer)
  • Advanced Sound Retriever
  • Compatible with Android
  • Advanced Sound Retriever Air
  • Manual Time Alignment
  • 3-Way Network Mode
  • Digital Direct - Yes

Would agree with that. Forget the cassette if you can - always possible to copy fav cassettes to CD/USB, or even feed a small cassette deck via Aux.
Sony or Pioneer look goers (if you can't find an interface kit that works!!), because we now have the steering wheel resistance data for those brands - for new models, that is . . . not sure whether it applies to very old ones.
Secondhand/old car radios a bit of a risk. For twice the price, you can have a new one. The Sony I got recently was only about £79 (Amazon), but doesn't have all the facilities of the one that Marc lists.
Direct compatibility with the Xantia's SWCs would be a positive bonus.

Thanks Marc. I didn't think about choosing a Xantia compatible search result. That narrows it down to about 7 models.
I'm trying to go on easiest/cheapest possible route. I'm thinking about repairing all issues on this Xantia and then sell it (or replace it for something smaller) and just wait for my XM to come back.
Thanks for pointing me in right direction. I'll check these 7 models and choose something.
PS: I have really nice collection of my favourite tapes and listening it on daily basis
PS2: I don't know why but radio seems to be much cheaper on Amazon than eBay.

If you’re really attached to your cassettes, and if you don’t have a computer that you can use to accept the audio in jack and convert them to MP3 files, you can use something that doesn’t need a PC like this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008F5AVPG/ ... 4883040156

This unit will do the conversion from an input source, like a headphone jack, and convert them to MP3 format for you. You can then save them from the unit into an SD card or a USB device, that high can play on your new Head Unit if it supports USB or SD.

No worries Marc I'll sort it out ;)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Citroen-Xant ... 2619391506
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kenwood-KDC120 ... +KDC-120UG
£90 vs £55 ? I can't belive. Doest it come with all features as the one from eBay ? I've send quote for a steering wheel control adaptor to eBay seller. So may get a radio from Amazon and adapror from eBay.
Lets keep it GREEN :D

Best thing is find the model you want then search for the best price on the model number, but make sure that it is like for like.

The price difference is basically because the eBay one is selling the complete kit with aerial adapter, removal keys and wiring adapter harness. The Amazon one is just for the head unit, so you would still have to buy the necessary harness and adapter.....
