Identifying Your RT3 Unit

This is the RT3 unit and was made by Magneti Marelli
The RT3 was available in a few different hardware versions, the later ones supporting MP3 playback. These units had an optical connection to the Display Screen.

Dave, you can actually change the voice from Female to Male if you have the system CD.

Regarding the announcing of the street names, I can't remember exactly where the setting is, but it can turned off. I believe it is in the navigation or route options menu somewhere... I'll try and find out for sure though.

Could someone post the different modelnumbers for the RT3 unit?
I have a CAN bus version laying around, which I can not use as my car has the VAN bus. The junkyard could help, but they need the modelnumber.
Alternatively, is it possible to convert the CAN bus version to VAN bus?

The version is dependent on the software on the system:

1) Switch the power on
2) Hold down the MENU button until you get the extended menu
3) Select DEVICE DESCRIPTION
4) The software version will then appear
If your software version exceeds 5.5 or 6.6 then your software has been upgraded

RT3 2001 VAN 5.50
RT3 2002 VAN 5.5D (color)
RT3 2003 CAN 6.60
RT3 2004 CAN 6.63 (color)

No, you cannot convert one to the other and if you attempt to upgrade with the wrong firmware it will brick it.

let me rephrase it
I have two options
a) find a VAN version at a junk yard, but they need the exact make and modelnumber.
b) Somehow fit the CAN version I have, in my car using an adapter, different wiring or something similar.

Mind you, I do not have a radio in the car. Which is annoying driving for 3 hours, in total silence

Again, you CANNOT convert anything. The electronic architecture of the RT3 unit has to match the electronic architecture of the vehicle. CAN / VAN have different data networks, operate at different speeds and use different ECUs. They are not interchangeable.

The best thing you can do is post your VIN here and I will try and locate a manufacturer part for the one that came with your vehicle. This may help with your searching. They are made by Magneti Marelli

Now you have really got me confused.

Your C5 was factory fitted with an RT2 unit according to your VIN...... - your build date was June 2002. My understanding is that they only fitted the early RT3 units to the end of the last production run of the C5 MK I (around 2003/2004).

My post here shows how to identify the CAN VAN models visually:

viewtopic.php?p=532390#p532390

So what are you trying to do retrofit an update to your RT2?

I am merely trying to figure out, what unit was in the car originally, so I can fill the empty hole, get the navigation in the glove box working, the cd changer working, listen to those nice jbl speakers and actually see some info on the big screen. But I want the radio to be the same model, as the car came with.
If you have the part number, model number or similar, it is a huge help

Ok, so you have an RT2 system.

These are very hard to get hold of now,

Citroen part numbers: 6560W0 or 6560EW or 6564PT or 6564PL

Ive been out of the loop for a whille with regard to the forum and especially when it comes to the Lexia. But I had a request from a C5 owner to code his Peugeot RT3 radio to his Citroen. It sems that my V1 Lexia is too old for this purpose, it gives the option for an RT3 phone unit but doesn't recognise the unit itsself. Can anyone tell me what version I'd need to do the radio code? Thanks

You'll find most of the coding on this unit is done via the Multifunction Screen ECU - so that is where you need to look and then undertake the configuration in there.

Hi Marc, Thanks for responding. We tried that this morning. It shows the original peugeot Vin and there's no way of changing it in the unit. The unit works, just emits anoyingly loud peeps whenever listening to the radio cd or satnav. Hence our question about the Lexia. He rekons the unit is RT4 but looks nothing like the RT 4 picture. His unit has the circular menu and a hard drive which I believe the RT3 didn't have, but looks like the pic of the RT3 in the audio and telematics thread.
Confused!!
Update, I've just been on a Peugeot forum and confirmed its an RT4. So back to the original question, can I update the vin with a Lexia and if so what version of Lexia do I need?

Re: Identifying Your RT3 Unit

The RT3 Navidrive was the earlier version of the older RT4 which look identical to the RT3 units on the telematics section pictures for the earlier era (2004-2007). There are later versions of RT4 that were fitted to the C6 and early C5 X7s - but these are completely different physically.

You need to be aware (or should I say the member you are helping) that the RT4 he is fitting needs to be compatible with the electronic Architecture of the C5 he wants to fit it to. The MK II C5s that were fitted with RT3 systems could have either a CAN or a VAN version of the RT3, depending on the electrical architecture of the vehicle. You can't therefore fit a CAN version of RT4 unit into a C5 that uses the comfort VAN network - it won't recognise the unit.

Back to the coding. With reference to what I've said above, the same principle applies to coding the VIN, however it is essential that your VCI is fully CAN compatible. If you have an older interface it may be missing components on the motherboard needed to fully communicate with full CAN BUS vehicles. On the earlier RT3 units, there were 2 versions available a VAN version and a CAN version of RT3. These were not interchangeable as the vehicle had different electrical data networks and you needed the right RT3 version to match. So if this is a later RT4, then it should be a full CAN system IIRC, so your Lexia kit needs to be a full chip CAN version, if not, it probably won't be able to communicate on the CAN network with some ECUs.

Obviously I don't know what versions of RT3/4 you have or any info on the interface you have.

Brilliant Marc!! Exactly the sort of knowlege I was looking for. I'm a Xantia man and have no knowlege of the C5 but since I've got the Lexia I thought I'd try to help out.
I'ts just proving a little more difficult than I thought.
I spent the day reformatting an old laptop to Win 10 and then downloading diagbox9.87 only to find I only need 7.02 or thereabouts which will work on the XP on the old laptop.
Thats what I'll be doing tomorrow.
Thanks again.

Ok best of luck. So depending on what you can pick up, undertake a full vehicle diagnostic and when it has completed, it will list all the ECUs at the top of the list starting with the BSI. You will be looking for either the RT4 ECU / Telematics unit or the Multifunction Display, select either of these and there will be several other menus - try looking at the 'Configuration' - 'Manual Configuration' or similar menus to see if you can locate the section where the VIN needs coding. Some units only require the last 8 alpha numeric instead of the full 17 character / numbers to be input - you should be able to see which from the original entry when yu locate the section.

Failing that, you can try and configure the BSI and locate the entry there.

Sorry I can't be more precise, but these menus and options change with the weather!
