207 gear oil level check

Post by doctle »

Another pothole another pair of shocks to replace. This time I wasn't concentrating and I lost a little gearbox oil. I'm not sure how much so I will need to top it up. The box is top filled under the battery so does anyone know a way to check the oil level on these? It was replaced in March.

Yes it's manual and I didnt lose much, but it went on the floor so now way of measuring it and it's been covered with fullers earth now anyway. When I drained it in March there was 1L in it but I'd say a lost 200 mil at the most. My nearest Peugeot dealer is 40 miles away so I'll have to drive there if possible.

For your info - as they are 'sealed for life', in the event of a leak they recommend a drain and refill to get the correct level - see warning below

Capacities:
Quantity of oil to fill after draining: 2.1 ± 0.1 litres.
Quantity of oil to fill after an overhaul: 2.2 ± 0.1 litres.
Oil quality: 75W80.

CAUTION: It is necessary to drain the gearbox and put back the exact quantity of oil, in the event of an external leak or a repair.

75W-80 GL4 gear oil (and not GL5 or 4/5), eg Total Transmission 8.

Yesterday I drained the gearbox oil there was 1.7 litres in the box. I added 1.8 litres and when I was replacing the battery noticed the copper seal off the bung was on the ground. I had to sacrifice the wife's baking bowl as I had nothing clean enough to catch the oil in. She wasn't impressed. I suppose I'd have got away with the 1.7 anyway.

I would have used a new crush washer, to ensure a good tight seal. Copper washers can (over time when in contact with a hot surface) harden up and then not provide such a good seal when reused.
