207 1.4 16v Starting problem

Post by johntom »

Hi
I have a 2006 207 1.4 petrol which sometimes struggles to start. When the key is turned sometimes it’s as though the starter doesn’t spin or not completely, definitely electrical, the car doesn’t start and the clock display flashes on the default date as though the battery has been disconnected ?This is intermittent but getting worse. I fitted a second hand starter motor and the problem disappeared for a month or so, then it happened again so I fitted a new starter motor last night but the problem is still there. Is there a starter relay or a problematic earth wire on these cars ?
Thanks

It’s as though the key/ignition switch isn’t always making contact as it should?

Are you sure your battery isn't end of cycle? The flashing clock is the giveaway that the battery has been disconnected or the power is so low at some point as to have caused the same.

Hi
Hadn’t thought about that as it recently went a few weeks without issue. It’s made me wonder if the terminals are tight enough?

Measuring the voltage at rest won't really be enough to test the battery under load. You can see what the reading is showing engine off anyway - just to see what it is reading, then with the engine running, it should be anything from 14.3 - 1407 ish volts if charging - but that won't indicate whether the battery has any welly under load - like trying to start the car whilst operating the various ECUs and injection systems etc.

Remember to follow the procedure here if disconnecting and reconnecting the battery - or you could end up with more electrical problems.

How old is the car battery anyway? You could try taking it off and giving it a good long trickle charge overnight - then follow the re-connection part of the procedure and see how she starts.

Hi
The battery terminals are tight. Not sure on the battery age, it’s strange how the non starting is intermittent, if the battery’s cranking power was reduced wouldn’t the symptoms be consistent ?

Do you have a link to the battery disconnect/reconnect procedure and I will charge it as suggested, or is it disconnect earth first, reconnect last ?
Many thanks
