Yet another niggle

Post by doctle »

I finally got the car scanned yesterday re the airbag light turns out It's a damaged wire under the drivers seat. I mentioned to him that the glow plug light never comes on and the car is a little hard to start when cold. He told me the light only comes on at 2c. Today it's -2c and no light and car is hard to start.
Where do I start? Test light first? Relay?
Sorry for all the questions

Is this the 207?, as you have a 307 in your profile? If the 207 I have the VIN, but not for the 307.

Normally you would get a 'Plugs never supplied' error code, relating to the Glow Plug relay - depends on year etc...

Part is 598140.

Maybe a fault on the glow plug warning light system, try just switching on and counting twenty before trying to start, sometimes the plugs are working but the light is not, sometimes the light works but goes off prematurely.

Here's the Glow Plug Relay connections which may help testing:

It's a 207 I am still trying to change it on my profile. Thanks for the info where is the relay located, I will try the 20 second test later, when warm the car starts instantly

Thanks for the diagram Marc, Gibbo, I have tried the 20 second wait made no difference. The relay looks a little inaccessible with big hands but It will come out one way or t' other. Does the relay supply power to the dash light?

No, not directly, The relay gets power from the Engine Fuse Box, then has 4 pins supplying power to the plugs, there is an earth, and a diagnostic connection linked to the engine ECU. That's your 8 pins / connections - the Engine ECU most likely supplies the communication to the BSI and from there to the dashboard display using the CAN bus wiring.

I think I may have taken off the wrong relay! The glow plug relay seems to be under the fuse box? Do I have to remove the fuse box to get it out? The relay I have off seems to be for the fuel pump part number is 240107

Can't tell from that, as 240107 is not a PSA part number on the 207.

That's the official location and should have an 8 pin black connector to it.

If I remove the fuse box will the car refuse to start? There is just a wire connection in that location on the fuse box

Can you take some photos or something, as it's difficult to see from here!

Yes, removing the fuse box will prevent the car starting.

Sorry Marc I worded the question badly. I once took the fuse box out of a 206 to dry it out car wouldn't start afterwards I had to bring it to a garage. Too dark now to take photos but I was checking brakes and stuff listening to the radio and the battery went flat. I jumped it off a spare battery and it started instantly, new battery maybe needed?

Economy mode would normally be triggered after 30 mins which would normally shut off the radio, but if it has gone flat then that would indicate a poor battery that is at end of service life. If it's anything over 5 years old, then that's really about it - some will go for longer depending on use of course, but will gradually not hold a charge for long and will start to affect starting.

If it's over 7 years then it's on borrowed time already :-D

As for the fuse box, these can be very sensitive as can be the connections, so extreme caution is advised as so many things depend on it. They don't like being disturbed is all I can say. But I've not heard of having to remove this is get to the glow plug relay - normally these are near or on the side of the battery housing - but generally in that vicinity.

I will have to get a new battery as the jump start battery has terminals on the opposite side, it's round about freezing now so I will have a cup of tea then try to jump it. The boot was open when I was working at the car but you are probably right 30 mins radio and a boot light shouldn't flatten a battery.
