308 Knocking from nearside rear of car

Post by Stafford_Mart »

Another query regarding my 308 cc is the knock I hear from the rear nearside of the car.

I first heard it when I dropped the roof down and it was quite pronounced and as I couldn’t hear it when the roof was back up I thought it might be the way the roof folded and was hitting something in the boot area but I now think it might be something suspension having had a similar knock on my 350Z last year which was one of the suspension arm bushes.

If anyone has had a similar problem or knows if any of the bushes are prone to failure I’d appreciate any help.

Also does anyone know what the two dumbbell type items are attached to the rear each end? They just look like counterweights to me.

Certainly if there are any help topics that can give a good idea as to which bushes would benefit from being upgraded to help the ride and cornering that would be good too.

Many thanks.

Mart.

I had a long standing knocking from the rear of my 307 which I couldn't find - until one day it gave itself away when the damper top mount fell apart as the alloy had corroded to dust. Subject to confirming the VIN, the 308 looks to use a very similar part, so it could well be that. The only way to confirm is to take the damper off (not hard) and have a look at the top mount.

Thanks Marc / Richard.

I'll get Vin No later and post up but sounds a good place to start as everything seems so solid and the noise is so annoying.

Cheers

Thanks Marc

Very helpful diagrams.

I’ll take a look at the weekend and see if anything is amiss.

On the subject of the bushes are there any better bushes worth fitting (both front and rear) that will help with handling and also last longer.
I don’t know if there are any poly bushes out there or just stick with the standard replacements.

I have heard also that front and rear lowering springs also help the ride and cornering of the car, is this true or is it a case of don’t mess just replace as and when?

Cheers

Mart.

Personally speaking I would just replace with OEM parts - but then I'm not a Lewis Hamilton :-D

I'm sure there are various Carlos Fandango uprated components available - but you may need to replace other associated parts too - and if considering, you may need to drop the old insurance a line to advise them as according to these, suspension mods are a sure 25% premium increase

https://www.keithmichaels.co.uk/modifie ... ons-guide/

Even brake upgrades are a 35% increase - the logic behind that being that the manufacturer's braking system should be sufficient for the specific vehicle and therefore if you upgrade the brakes to stop more quickly, the implication is that in in theory a driver may decide they can drive faster!

Yep, looks the same. Item 3 - it's got a rubberised bush inside, as the mount gets eaten away the bush starts to move about. One of mine the top of the mount disappeared completely allowing the damper shaft to flop and bang about really loudly! In theory, you can fit a new mount, but the nut on the top of the damper was just a rusty mess on mine, no way it was going to come apart; I just fitted a new damper complete from a breakers; you might not want to do that if you are worried about 10/10ths handling!!

Cheers guys.

I'll take a look on Saturday and see if there's any damage. Thinking about it this might explain the knock I get when I apply the brakes, especially in reverse. Might be a loose or worn damper bracket or bush. Maybe things are now starting to fall into place now I've decided to keep the car.
Thanks again.

Hiya Xantia, I hadn't seen yur post sorry but just read it. Seems to tally up with what I've found out already and mine does feel flat at times.
I understand fully the issues with carbon build up and that Redex won't clear the backs of the valves. I have found some improvement in the running since I bought it, probably down to the M6 every week and 300 plus miles a week too whereas the previous 2 lady owners tootled into town and back.
The chain slipped at 51k which annoyed me as my 2.3 Saab Viggen I used to own had 104k on the clock and was a beut but heavy on the fuel. Shouldn't have sold it.
Car is in for an oil change after 5k tomorrow and a compression check too to see any problems.
I did notice that the Peugeot garage I first took the car too only seem interested in fault codes. If none are showing then the car is fine. Not to my standards it's not....so I use an independent garage now who actually listen to a customer not just look at fault codes.
Hopefully the car will get me through the winter and I can swap it next year......unless it starts showing its good side.
Cheers for the info too.
Regards.
Mart.
