407 hdi 136 advice please

Post by moizeau »

I've got the chance of a 2006 407 hdi 136 auto saloon at a good price (up for £800 ono). It's got 165K miles on the clock. I'm not put off by high-ish miles as long as it's been looked after. What are the things to look out for? I.E. things that will negate the good price. Needs a cam belt in another 15K. Apparently good bodywork and no obvious leaks. I haven't seen the car in person as it's in the UK. All advice gratefully received.
Thanks very much
Pete

The gearbox, claimed to be sealed for life, will benefit from getting it's fluid changed, do it twice as you don't get it all out, do a few hundred miles between the changes. The 2.0 136 16v engine is a sound engine, I had a c5 with it and enjoyed it, never a moment's worry with it, possibly would still have it if it hadn't been written off in a bump. Check the heating, it's common for the distribution and heat flaps to stick, breaking the motors, and can be a dash out job to repair. Apart from that nothing really to worry about. Use the correct oil when servicing as that can affect the dpf. My 407 is currently knackered but it's probably due to getting a dodgy remap which has knackered the engine electrics somewhere, so if you do consider a remap go to a reliable, recommended place to do it, not a back street guy working from his driveway like I did.

Thanks for the heads up, just talked to my mate who's a french mechanic, he said gearbox as well, he described it as hydra-electronique with it being the 6 speed/tiptronic, just asked my brother to get the keys for it (it's parked outside his unit) take a load of pictures etc. ask whether the g/box oil has been changed, check the heater goes hot to cold. I'm going to give a mate a ring who's got a garage specialising in Pug and Cit to check it over. I've checked previous MOTs and there are advisories. Rear anti roll bar bush and something about upper and lower engine covers. No idea what that means, They were on previous MOTs with the engine covers being noted as 'present so that inspection of components isn't possible'??? No idea what that's about, I thought all modern cars covered the engine so that you can only see filling holes.
Thanks again

MOT testers frequently add that comment, I presume to cover themselves in the event that there is something serious going on under the covers.
They are, under the terms of the MOT, no permitted to remove anything, including such covers.

More like them covering their selves than giving you an advisory then, thanks the info
