Cam belt snapped on Peugeot partner please help!

Post by JayRenton »

Hi guys, so traveling down the motorway at 70mph and the van comes to a halt with and awful sound, I’ve had a look and the cam belt has completely ripped apart and snapped.
The van is a 62 plate 1.6 turbo diesel not sure on the engine code yet.
I’m thinking the engine seriously damage so would it be worth while just putting in a low mileage second hand engine and fitting a new cam belt kit/water pump etc?
I’ve change a good few engines in my time but I’m just wondering if there are any special tools I would need. Also if I was to buy a bare engine can I just swap over all the ancillary’s/ injectors etc without the need for any re coding?
Any advice or tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers James

Sorry to hear about that!

If you are swapping over a complete identical engine, plus the donor BSI, the Engine ECU, Key fob transponders you may get away with it - but because there are so many variations of these vans you may find that some of the original electronic components will throw a wobbly and may need recoding to the donor BSI - like the ABS module for example, but hard to say for sure.

If you are just swapping an identical engine only and using your original electrical components I can't see there being an issue - but the engine really should be identical to avoid issues with the software settings programmed for that exact engine type.

Welcome; sorry it's not on better terms!

That's very unusual; not heard of a belt failure on this engine. 2012 is the change over from the earlier 16V to the later 8V engine. If it's a 16V then a replacement will definitely be the way to go. If it's an 8V (and it's not done starship mileage) then it might be worth stripping the head off to see what the damage is - the injectors are easier to get out on the 8V engines. The official route is to take the engine out the bottom, but I'm pretty sure it would be amenable to coming out the front if you strip the bumper, grill and radiator out. If it's got AC then you might need to get it vacced out as I think you will need to remove the condenser, as there is not enough room to swing it out the way. If you fit a replacement but use your injectors, then no coding should be required. Post up or PM the last 8 digits of the VIN, and we can confirm engine fitted.

Good luck!

If its an 8 valve do they have sacrificial rockers like the 2.0.? If so that me be the only damage.

Thanks for the replies, the last 8 digits of the vin are...
CJ734011, ive also noticed there is oil splashed on the underside of the bonnet but seems to clean for engine oil, also the coolant fluid looks dirty in the bottle I’m pretty sure it was pink before but not a hundred percent and yes it’s got a/c to make things more of a ball ache!

Ok, so that's a PARTNER UTILITY VEHICLE (B9) VAN 1.6 HDi 75 (DV6ETED4) Manual gearbox 5, so an 8 valve if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, 8V - it does have rockers very similar to the 2.0 HDi; so they may be the weak link.

Cheers guys, so do you think it’s worth stripping the head off first to investigate the damage? Even if the pistons look ok and I repair or replace the head/valves is it possible the conrods could be bent been as it was doing 70mph when it happened? I’d be gutted if I had it all fixed and the bottom end was knocking or something. I’ve been quoted roughly 2.5k to have a second hand engine fitted.
Seems steep as there’s loads of engines on eBay low mileage for around £500 with warranty I’m pretty sure I could fit it myself just means swapping over everything as they are just bare engines.

Really need this back on the road.

I would check under the rocker cover first. The HDi engines use a particular design of rocker arm that is meant to fail in the case of a belt failure, hopefully thereby protecting more expensive components.

If the rockers are broken I'd bet there's no other damage, certainly wasn't on my 2.0 HDI when the idler wheel failed and let the belt skip the teeth.

Fishing out the debris from the valve box was a bit of a trial, needle bearings in all the nooks and crannies but a magnetic screwdriver did the trick.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Seemingly on this engine you can remove the camshaft and rockers without having to remove the injectors. So I would definitely take the rocker cover off and have a look. If there is evidence of broken rockers, then strip out the camshaft and remove the rockers, then turn the bottom end over to see if you have compression. If you have, then fit new rockers, time it up, and see if it will go. Unfortunately the rockers are £27.50 each, so it might be a bit of an expensive experiment....

Cheers guys, ok so I’ll strip the cover off and hope the rockers are damaged fingers crossed!!!
I will also investigate why the belt snapped.
So then is it just a new cambelt kit and rockers?
Where’s the best place for the rockers?

Sorry for all the questions!!

Well at least I will only need 8 not 16.

What is my actual engine code?

You can get the rockers on e-bay by the looks if it for around a tenner, e.g. rockers (note that's not the right picture). PSA part number 90365.

Engine code DV6ETED4 as Marc posted above
