The tank is over half full with fuel, but when the engine is running, I have no problems. I will check the battery as it may have suffered in the past if starting was a problem. The battery is 73AH 620A
Been looking at a battery vendors site and they recommend 78AH 728A 096 type
Is the difference significant?

096 battery should do a good job.
728 CCA is a whole hundred amps better than 620, so worth getting.
Our 096 75Ah 650 CCA (a Yuasa 3000) spins our 2.5 briskly when fully charged/in normal use.

I have seen batteries advertised for the 2.2hdi rated at 64ah. I doubt I can get a bigger one to fit than what I already have. Something else must be wrong.

"096" is just the physical size and shape, with the correct terminals in the correct corners, and followed by all battery manufacturers.
It's the one listed for your car: from Yuasa, a choice of three, at increasing cost:
1096 70Ah 620A CCA
3096 75Ah 650A CCA
5096 80Ah 760A CCA
Amp-hours (Ah) is the theoretical measure of how long a battery can deliver a modest current for (the battery capacity), eg 70Ah = 7A for 10 hours.
Of more interest for starting diesels (very high current demand from both GPs and starter motor) is the Cold Cranking Amperage figure (CCA). The higher the better, and 600A is a minimum to go for. Some batteries offer 830 CCA, but these are rare and expensive, and not necessary for our engines.

Re: 807 2.2 hdi glow plugs new - no start
The battery seems strong enough and the engine turns over at a reasonable speed, it is just not capable of starting when cold. I tried powering the new glow plugs directly, but it is not enough without ether spray. The water temperature gauge shows when the engine is warm.
Is it possible that the injectors are not working at low speed? I will try some additive when it arrives.

Is there a injector pressure regulator on this engine? Just wondering if it is leaking and not allowing enough pressure for starting.

Re: 807 2.2 hdi glow plugs new - no start
Just wondering if there is a problem with the injector pressure regulator? Mine is a 2005 model with the rail under the inlet manifold. My book shows a later arrangement so I would like to know where it is. If it is not sealing properly, might it cause low pressure on starting?

You're really stumbling about in the dark without some decent diagnostics - you can't just poke and hope with a modern ECU controlled car.
