407 Problems and Solutions

Post by doctle »

OK guys soon as Christmas is over I plan on getting a 407 1.6 Hdi, there are plenty around most have turbo problems or need a clutch. I know about the turbo issues thanks to this forum. I'd prefer to replace a clutch with a solid flywheel setup but which one fits?

I'd be wary of buying one with a duff turbo, unless it's v cheap, or otherwise in excellent condition. Plenty of 2nd hand engines, so if it's well crudded up, and otherwise good a powerplant transplant would probably work out the best.

I believe only Valeo do a 'Kit-4P' solid conversion. I'm not sure it's much cheaper than a clutch & DMF. If you drive with a bit of care, the DMF will last anyway (original in my 307 at 140k).

Clutch change on this engine is a fag as you have take out the DPF to get at one of the bolts, and the easiest way to do this is by removing the radiator - although the garage that did our C4 manged it with the rad in (no idea how!).

The car is very cheap €300.00 turbo is gone. I know about cleaning the sump and pickup removing the gauze etc that should make it ok with a different turbo. The car has 120k miles and the flywheel is noisy. I can do the work myself I work slowly anyway and my 307 has test until May so no rush. I was hoping a flywheel off something like a 306 would fit! I believe the 90 brake 307 had a solid flywheel but not positive. It's a nice car navy blue just had a timing belt and wp done with receipt in glove box he just wants the money for the belt job.

I hadn't thought of that... the 307 with the 1.6 HDi 90 engine does without a DMF, but uses the same crankshaft, so it may well fit.

I would not even consider using a used DMF. If it fails it will normally take out clutch parts.

Nor me mate not even a new one if I can avoid it, I had terrible trouble with an Octavia eventually I put a G60 vw flywheel costing a tenner in a new and clutch and Robert was my father's brother. I was thinking more of getting a solid flywheel from a Berlingo or similar and just buying a clutch kit probably Valeo or Borg & Beck
